My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Light Pirate

Heather Frimmer Why did I love this book?

This riveting story takes place in near future Florida as rising water levels and crumbling infrastructure have made the state nearly uninhabitable. But Wanda, a remarkable child named after a powerful hurricane of the same name, chooses to stay and battle the elements.

I happened to read this terrifying, beautifully written novel while on vacation in Hollywood, Florida, making the dystopian future landscape terrifyingly real and easy to imagine.

The writing is gorgeous, and the author’s commentary on climate change is sobering: a true masterpiece for our time.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of No Two Persons

Heather Frimmer Why did I love this book?

I am a sucker for books about books, and this one reigns supreme in that category.

This unusual novel in linked stories enveloped me in a warm hug, made me laugh, and brought me to tears, sometimes on the very same page.

The premise is simple: how does one book touch many people in different ways? From the author to the agent to a bookseller to a free diver whose girlfriend leaves the book on a table to a homeless teen forced to read the book for a school assignment, each story is affecting and quietly powerful. From the delicate writing to the seamless execution, Bauermeister has created a sparkling gem of a novel that is not to be missed.

What is this book about?

One book. Nine readers. Ten changed lives. New York Times bestselling author Erica Bauermeister’s No Two Persons is “a gloriously original celebration of fiction, and the ways it deepens our lives.”*

That was the beauty of books, wasn’t it? They took you places you didn’t know you needed to go…

Alice has always wanted to be a writer. Her talent is innate, but her stories remain safe and detached, until a devastating event breaks her heart open, and she creates a stunning debut novel. Her words, in turn, find their way to readers, from a teenager hiding her homelessness, to…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Connellys of County Down

Heather Frimmer Why did I love this book?

I adored Lange’s 2021 debut novel, We Are the Brennans, so I picked up her second novel immediately after publication. So excited to start reading, I took my library book on a cross-country trip to a writing conference. I just couldn’t bear to leave it behind.

This beautiful story centers on thirty-year-old Tara Connelly as she is released from eighteen months in prison for a drug charge. She moves back in with her sister, brother, and nephew and tries to rebuild a life for herself. Before long, past traumas, hidden family secrets, and a complicated love interest all threaten to derail Tara before she’s even gotten started.

A nuanced story about family loyalties, healing old wounds, and fresh new beginnings had me turning the pages well past my bedtime. I rooted for each member of the Connelly family to find the path to healing and forgiveness.
