My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Imogen, Obviously

E.A. Neeves Why did I love this book?

I adored Imogen, Obviously. The writing is stellar. The flirty texts between Imogen and Tessa are cute and funny and so believable in the way they show these two teens catching feelings. The friendship between Imogen and Lili is enviable.

But the main reason I picked Imogen, Obviously, as my favorite book of the year is because I related, a lot, to Imogen’s circular, questioning, doubting thought process. I wish I had had a book like this when I was Imogen’s age, and I think its message is an important one, for all ages and identities.

By Becky Albertalli,

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked Imogen, Obviously as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 14, 15, 16, and 17.

What is this book about?

A New York Times and Indie bestseller!

With humor and insight, #1 New York Times bestseller Becky Albertalli explores the nuances of sexuality, identity, and friendship in this timely new novel.

Imogen Scott may be hopelessly heterosexual, but she’s got the World’s Greatest Ally title locked down.

She's never missed a Pride Alliance meeting. She knows more about queer media discourse than her very queer little sister. She even has two queer best friends. There's Gretchen, a fellow high school senior, who helps keep Imogen's biases in check. And then there's Lili—newly out and newly thriving with a cool new…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of A Court of Mist and Fury

E.A. Neeves Why did I love this book?

Yes, this book has faeries and magic and a hot enemies-to-lovers romance. But the thing that brings A Court of Mist and Fury from a sexy fantasy adventure to a book I keep thinking about despite having closed its pages is the way Maas includes Feyre’s struggles with depression.

I haven’t seen another fantasy series make learning to overcome the trauma the main character experienced in book one an integral part of the emotional plotline in its sequel, encapsulated by this line Feyre says to Rhysand: “I am broken and healing, but every piece of my heart belong to you.”

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Cleat Cute

E.A. Neeves Why did I love this book?

Meryl Wilsner crafts great characters with great chemistry. Cleat Cute makes my top three books of the year because it’s so much fun.

The central miscommunication is gold. The joy I felt while reading about two people with very different understandings of their relationship status reminded me of the start of my own relationship with my now-husband, where I thought we’d gone on a date that my then-friend thought was just a friendly outing with flirty potential.

When he asked me to go on a date with him officially about six days later, as if we hadn’t already been on one successful date, I said yes, and then said, “didn’t we already do this?” It’s been a joke to us about when our relationship officially started ever since.

Book cover of After You Vanished

What is my book about?

Teddy’s favorite place is Bottomrock Lake, where lilypads edge the shore. She’s worked there as a lifeguard every summer, including last year, when her twin sister Izzy waded into the lake for a midnight swim and vanished. Izzy was an accomplished swimmer, so she couldn’t possibly have drowned. And if she did somehow drown, where’s her body, and why is her passport missing?

When Toby, the gorgeous jerk who was with Izzy on the night she vanished, comes to Bottomrock to work as a lifeguard alongside Teddy, she can’t help but be suspicious. How many of her sister’s secrets does he hold? And how can Teddy unearth them—without falling for the boy who watched her sister disappear?

My 3-year-old's favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type

E.A. Neeves Why did they love this book?

When I asked him why he loved this book, he said, “Because the cows go click, clack, moo.” You can’t really argue with his logic. My son loves books that lend themselves to funny sound-making, to the point where when I’m reading to him, I sometimes feel like a sound effect machine, in the best of ways.
