Book cover of The Silent Patient

David Wickenden Why did I love this book?

Alicia, a prominent painter, is arrested for the murder of her husband. The situation leaves her unable to communicate and the courts sentence her to a forensic unit to live forever in silence.

Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist, feels he can help Alicia find her voice. But Theo has his own inner demons. The two work together to discover what happened that fateful night.

The writing was memorizing. Both Theo’s and Alicia’s stories keep the reader enthralled. The climax comes as a total surprise and is more shocking because of it. I had heard about this book for a while. So glad I took a chance on this author.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Home Front

David Wickenden Why did I love this book?

Home Front tells the story of a woman who goes off to war as a helicopter pilot in Iraq.

Before leaving, her husband, a lawyer, tells her he no longer loves her. Dealing with the absence of her two children and her lost love, she heads to war. Dad must now play an active role in the family and learn how to deal with two children who miss their mother.

Rather than the father, mom goes off to war. The author examines the sacrifice of military families both at home and at war. Also explored is the aftermath of war. Governments who ask their soldiers to make the ultimate sacrifice must support them when they come home broken and scared.

This is a fantastic, yet heartbreaking story of sacrifice, love, commitment, responsibility. Kristin Hannah is one of my favorite authors.
