Why read it?

4 authors picked Unbroken as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This book is unequaled for its raw, inspiring portrayal of human resilience. Louis Zamperini's journey from troubled youth to Olympian to war hero captivated me from the first page. I was deeply moved by his unwavering spirit in the face of unimaginable hardships, especially during his harrowing 46 days at sea and brutal experiences as a POW.

I felt as if I were right there with Louis, experiencing every triumph and setback. What touched me most was Louis's eventual path to forgiveness and redemption. His ability to overcome trauma and alcoholism, rekindle his marriage, and find peace left me in…

Louis Zamperini was an Olympic runner before WWII. He had extraordinary talent, which almost disqualified him from my list. But after his plane crashed in the Pacific, and then as a Japanese prisoner, he endured unbelievable hardship. And shortly after returning home, he was done running—no more extraordinary talent.

He spent years fighting alcohol addiction and PTSD before we knew what PTSD was. He recovered, accepted Jesus, learned how to forgive, and reached out to his former torturers who had taken away his prime athletic years. But even better, author Laura Hillenbrand demonstrated what it means for authors to get…

Reading this book was a journey that I can’t forget.

One aspires to be the main subject of this piece of non-fiction – a young WWII soldier who survived, first being lost at sea in shark-infested waters and then in a vicious POW camp. The details and context of the story hooked me in, and I learned details about the Pacific front that left me aghast. I’m not a WWII scholar, and you don’t need to be one to love this book.

The author takes you by the hand and presents history to you as the story progresses. She also…

Four more sons worked with their father, tenant farmers near Minburn until, one by one, all five sons were serving their country in the military. The oldest son re-enlisted in the Navy. I wanted to end with an uplifting story of endurance and reconciliation from the Eastern theater of WWII. After his bomber plane crashed in the Pacific, Louie Zamperini, an American distance runner at the 1936 Berlin Olympiad, managed to survive on a raft for a record 47 days, drifting over 2,000 miles when, skeletal and near death, he is caught by the Japanese and sent to a brutal prisoner of war camp.

Hillenbrand is a master storyteller who has uncovered amazing details of Louie’s life. I am in awe of his courage, inspired by his resilience of both body and…
