The Testament of Mary
Book description
âTĂłibĂn is at his lyrical best in this beautiful and daring workâ (The New York Times Book Review) that portrays Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianityâshortlisted for the 2013 Man BookerâŚ
Why read it?
2 authors picked The Testament of Mary as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
This novel has such a wonderfully bold premise: itâs a retelling of the story of the crucifixion of Jesus through the eyes of Jesusâ mother, Mary. I love how TĂłibĂn takes one of the founding stories of Western civilisation and manages to make it intimate. Jesus is still the Son of God, of course, but he is also the son of a woman, a flesh and blood man, who suffers a torturous death in front of his friends and family.
Using a first-person narrative, TĂłibĂn gives us the world through Maryâs eyes, showing a humble woman caught up in extraordinaryâŚ
From Victoria's list on short historical novels that pack an emotional punch.
With characteristic charm, Toibinâs book is almost perversely historically inaccurate, as if he is enjoying teasing the reader: I seem to remember Jesus being sent to his room at one point, like a teenager in suburbia, when Judaean houses of the period were of a single piece; a burial scene feels very much like a burial in a peat soiled Ireland, no Judaean deserts here. And yet the book achieves its own honesty because, as Keats said: âBeauty is Truth, Truth Beauty.â
From Jonathan's list on fiction with Jesus as a character.
