Why read it?

8 authors picked Oh, the Places You'll Go! as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This is a book that someone gifted me for college graduation, and although I had no aspirations of becoming a children’s book author at the time, I loved the inspirational message of the story.

What will I do? Where will I live? Who will I become? These are questions that most young people ask themselves, especially at a milestone moment in their lives, like graduation. In this book—with its lyrically wonderful rhyming words and otherworldly illustrations—Dr. Seuss reminded me that I am in control of my destiny.

The book does a good job of blending the realities of life with…

When I’m feeling stuck, I pick up this children’s book of rhyming, lyrical delight. Easy sentences I read out loud that encourage decision-making.

The story validates my choices, promoting an expansion of ideas and affirming growth. I am also touched by the gentle words after a fall-down. The story acknowledges that life has difficult moments and cheers you to go forward. A kind, welcoming book that says, “You can do anything!” Is that cool or what?

From Jane's list on aging.

Like Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss is one of my illustrating/writing heroes. Every verse, every page takes you to an unexpected place.

I like this book also because of its whimsical philosophy: “You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can take yourself any  direction you choose…”

This book reminds readers of all ages to lighten up, laugh, and keep going.

I first read this book when I was young and then read this book to my daughter when she was young. This book, like many of Dr. Seuss’s books, instills wonder and awe. Oh, the Places You’ll Go makes me dream of my next holiday and remember why we travel in the first place.

Although this book has been around for ages…it’s still one of my favorites!

When I first read it, to be truthful, it floored me.

Many may think of Dr. Seuss as just silly or wacky…but on the contrary, I discovered this book is not a rambling of silly rhymes, it’s actually quite profound. It’s full of great tidbits of practical advice & lessons that can be applied throughout one’s lifetime.

It’s truly inspiring and provides a re-boost of vigor with each read.

This book is a charm for kids of all ages who are eager to go out and explore the world! Dr. Seuss’ imagery is delightful and bright. His rhythmic poetry sings and rocks the soul. Read the book aloud to hear its music, and once you have reached its last word, please pause for a minute, close your eyes, let your mind wander about, and dream of all the places you will go…

From Marisha's list on for globetrotter kids.

Dr. Seuss’s writing and illustrations are both real and surreal at the same time. Oh, The Places You’ll Go encompasses the hurdles and triumphs that life involves, yet it is hopeful and optimistic. This book inspires one to use his or her innate skills, strength, and wisdom and give it their all in order to get the best out of life. This is one of my all-time favorite books. I love how I’ve read this book at many stages of my life and it has always been applicable.

From Ari's list on to inspire hope.

This book has been part of my life since I was a small child and its words have resonated with me all through my life. A story about the ups and downs of life set in a weird and whacky parallel world and told in rhyme with colourful witty illustrations as its backdrop, it is a real one of a kind that sticks with you on your passage through life. There have been many times when a line or phrase from this quirky and emotionally intelligent book will come back to me that aptly describes exactly how I am feeling…

From Nadine's list on to escape reality.
