Night Shift
Book description
Stephen King’s first collection of short stories, originally published in 1978, showcases the darkest depths of his brilliant imagination and will "chill the cockles of many a heart" (Chicago Tribune). Night Shift is the inspiration for over a dozen acclaimed horror movies and television series, including Children of the Corn…
Why read it?
4 authors picked Night Shift as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
A brilliant collection of horror stories, my favourite being Sometimes They Come Back.
I recommend this ghostly tale for its depiction of the fine line between the spirit realm and the world we live in. The narrative of earth-bound ghosts and their determination to exact revenge on the living bringing forth a fierce battle between good and evil. The latter played on my mind as I empathised with the main character’s psychological struggle with recapitulated past events, leaving those around him to question his sanity.
From Monique's list on combining the paranormal and psychopathy.
Originally published in 1978, I was still a bit young to be devouring such dark and twisted tales but this one became my own blueprint for writing short stories.
This wasn't my first SK book, I had previously read his other novels like Salem's Lot and The Stand. But once I discovered Night Shift, it was like getting a different story each and every time I opened the book.
There are no 'favorites' here because each one is sublime, but if I were forced to select 2-3 out of the 20, I'd go with "Gray Matter", "The Mangler",…
From Kenya's list on horror that deliver the most bang for the bite.
In the short story “Battleground”, a hitman finds himself under siege in his own apartment by an army of toy soldiers. It’s typical concept-on-a-napkin by Stephen King, and typically compulsive storytelling, too. I’ve got a special reverence for writers who can tackle silly narratives with the utmost conviction (it’s what I try to do myself!), and I just loved the ever-escalating madness here. The final twist will have you grinning, guaranteed.
From Sam's list on miniature stories about the miniature.
If you love Night Shift...
Night Shift by Stephen King is another creepy masterpiece. ”Graveyard Shift,” “The Lawnmower Man,” and “Children of the Corn” especially stand out from this strong collection of short fiction by today’s most notable horror author. Pop culture references bring his work up to date, and several of the stories read like they came from King’s own experience.
From William's list on classic horror story collections.
