He invites you to live in it with himâduring his sleepless nights, in the company of his twin babies, as a beloved Pope lies dying and the seasons bring new enchantments.
I canât say whether I love this book more for the writing or for its tender portrait of Rome. Read it for the double pleasures of exquisitely crafted vignettes andâŠ

I loved this book for its gorgeous writing, particularly the descriptions of paintings and buildings in Rome. I was so moved by Doerrâs evocative words that I was compelled to find online images of these subjects as I read.
Not only does he write with beautiful precision, but he also conveys his experiences with honesty and humility, noting the linguistic and physical challenges he encountered as a writer trying to justify a fellowship while raising two infants in an ancient city.
Life in Roma! This memoir is a gem and quite funny. Doerrâs prose is razor sharp and he cleverly shares his adventures of a year in Rome as a new parent of twins. Having just visited the Pantheon, I particularly enjoyed Doerâs description of this temple built by the emperor Hadrian in AD 125. He wrote, âWhen you first see it, the Pantheon is about wonder. You walk through the gigantic doorway and your attention is sucked upward toward a circle of sky. A filtering haze floats inside; a column of light strikes through the oculus and leans against theâŠ
