Why read it?

5 authors picked Behind Closed Doors as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

One of the most compelling aspects of the psychological or domestic thriller genre is the exploration of the horrors that go on inside the lives of ordinary people and this thriller is no exception.

It’s even called Behind Closed Doors! It’s a great title and perfectly captures the theme of the book – how a seemingly ordinary couple are caught up in a horrifyingly abusive relationship. It’s unsettling from the first chapter and only gets worse.

But like driving past a motorway pile-up, you can’t stop looking, desperately hoping there’s a happy ending in sight.

This is just the kind of twisty/turny bordering on very disturbing domestic-thriller book that I like to read. I was glued to the pages and I found myself regularly trying to figure out the plot twists, etc. That’s one of my favorite things when reading a book of this type and hoping (praying) I got it right when all is revealed. Another regular favorite author of mine, of whose books I have read many.

From Erica's list on mystery, suspense, and thrillers.

This book is a must-read for domestic-thriller enthusiasts. A staple that should be on your bookshelf! In this international bestseller, Jack and Grace appear to be the perfect couple. He's a powerhouse attorney who has never lost a case; she is a flawless homemaker, a masterful gardener, and cook. A storybook marriage that’s the envy of the neighborhood. But is all too good to be true? What appears to be the perfect marriage might just be the perfect lie in this twisty thriller!

New book alert!

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve read crime fiction since I was a kid, starting with Nancy Drew and the mystery magazines—Alfred Hitchcock, Mike Shayne, and Ellery Queen. While in elementary school, I wrote mystery short stories, which my sister illustrated, and we sold them on the street corner for 25 cents apiece. In the nineties, I devoured novels by Patricia Highsmith, Ruth Rendell, and P.D. James. The 2000s introduced another generation of favorite authors, including Belinda Bauer, Chris Whitaker, and Tana French. I love too many to name! My current passion is for novels that I can really sink my teeth into, with complex characters hiding dark secrets.

What is my book about?

Willem and Jurriaan have a miserable childhood thanks to their cruel, controlling mother—Louisa Veldkamp, a world-renowned pianist. Dad turns a blind eye. One day, Louisa vanishes without a trace during a family vacation.

Adoptee Anneliese Bakker survives a toxic childhood and leaves home, vowing never to return. While searching for her biological mother, she meets the adult Willem, and they fall in love. Pregnant and engaged, she moves into the family mansion, wanting nothing more than to create a loving family for her child. But the Veldkamps are cold and distant. And why is Louisa a taboo subject?

What You Made Me Do

Holy crap, this book. It’s one of those you gulp down in one sitting, then go back and read for a second time to find all the clues you missed. Jack and Grace are the perfect couple. They have charm, elegance, wealth…except her friends wonder why she never seems to answer the phone or be able to meet for coffee even though she doesn’t work, or why she never takes anything with her when she leaves the house, not even a pen. And those metal shutters on all the downstairs windows, what are they for? Creepy and intense and dazzlingly…

From Kimberly's list on suspenseful messed up marriages.

Say what you will about highly commercial fiction, but no one – and I mean no one – keeps pages turning better than B.A. Paris. She is the only author whose books become glued to my hand until I know what happened. I have kept reading while making dinner, attempting to fold laundry, answering emails, walking the dog, taking out the garbage. I don’t know what her pages are laced with, but it goes right into my brain and hijacks all decision-making. Do not stop reading! Plus, who doesn’t love a story that goes behind the closed doors of a…
