Why am I passionate about this?

My life is one of two halves; I spent the first half living in the industrial West Midlands, at school and then training to become a doctor, and the second half living in rural bliss in the southwest of England. For the day job, I’m an anesthesiologist, but my true passion, thanks to my mother being an English teacher, is reading romance and writing my own. I am well-travelled and spend a quarter of each year in France, so my books often have characters from all over Europe as well as characters working in the medical profession or overcoming/ living with a variety of health conditions.

Book cover of Attachments

Fearne Hill Why did I love this book?

I loved the uniqueness of this book, centred around the novelty of email in 1999. I love the idea of a nerdy guy whose job it is to read other folks' emails as he struggles with young adulthood approaching the dreaded Y2K. I loved how his POV is beautifully interspersed with cute epistolary exchanges.

Book cover of Caregiver

Fearne Hill Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because it’s tough, hard, and very, very real. I think it is a timeless reminder that AIDS has no cure and that in the 1990s, HIV was a death sentence. I love this author’s gritty writing; he’s a gay survivor of that era who never pulls his punches.

Book cover of Room 212

Fearne Hill Why did I love this book?

As a Brit, I love books set in the US; I love exploring our cultural differences. This one is an angsty emotional journey with a very strong female character, which isn’t always successfully pulled off in romance novels. Love isn’t always rainbows and sunshine, and I think this is one of those stories reminding us that it needs to be worked at.

Book cover of Bridget Jones's Diary

Fearne Hill Why did I love this book?

Yes, I know, we’ve all seen the movie, but the book is even better! I love everything essentially British about this: the men in her life, of course, but her flat, the dinner parties, the way everyone was obsessed with their weight (not always in a good way). But most of all, I love how Bridget was a heroine of her time.

Or the confused ramblings of a pissed thirty-something?

What is my book about?

This is a first love, second chance romance set in the 1990s in the industrial heart of England. It is a story of two boys, one from the wrong side of the tracks, one from the aspirational middle classes, whose paths are already carved in stone, who fall head-first into friendship and indie music and first-time fumbling and hormones and feelings-too-big-for-their-bodies and most of all, love.

Separated by a horrific event, it is not until many years later a circumstance reunites them. Despite having experienced very different lives, the spark between them remains. As they feel their way back to each other, rekindling their youthful romance and exploring the baggage accumulated by both of them, they both realise the love they shared never died.

Mimi Zieman Author Of Tap Dancing on Everest: A Young Doctor's Unlikely Adventure

New book alert!

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m an OB/GYN, passionate about adventuring beyond what’s expected. This has led me to pivot multiple times in my career, now focusing on writing. I’ve written a play, The Post-Roe Monologues, to elevate women’s stories. I cherish the curiosity that drives outer and inner exploration, and I love memoirs that skillfully weave the two. The books on this list feature extraordinary women who took risks, left comfort and safety, and battled vulnerability to step into the unknown. These authors moved beyond the stories they’d believed about themselves–or that others told about them. They invite you to think about living fuller and bigger lives.

Mimi's book list on women exploring the world and self

What is my book about?

Tap Dancing on Everest, part coming-of-age memoir, part true-survival adventure story, is about a young medical student, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor raised in N.Y.C., who battles self-doubt to serve as the doctor—and only woman—on a remote Everest climb in Tibet.

The team attempts a new route up the East Face without the use of supplemental oxygen, Sherpa support, or chance for rescue. When three climbers disappear during their summit attempt, Zieman reaches the knife edge of her limits and digs deeply to fight for the climbers’ lives and to find her voice.

26 authors picked Tap Dancing on Everest as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

The plan was outrageous: A small team of four climbers would attempt a new route on the East Face of Mt. Everest, considered the most remote and dangerous side of the mountain, which had only been successfully climbed once before. Unlike the first large team, Mimi Zieman and her team would climb without using supplemental oxygen or porter support. While the unpredictable weather and high altitude of 29,035 feet make climbing Everest perilous in any condition, attempting a new route, with no idea of what obstacles lay ahead, was especially audacious. Team members were expected to push themselves to their…
