Book cover of The Dutch House

Monica Parker ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved The Dutch House because it evoked the unpredictability of family and what family can come to mean. It explored what it feels to be tossed into the unexpected emotions of unpredictability and the meaning of family.

Tom Hanks was the narrator. His warmth and skill as a reader brought every character and location to life.

Lose yourself in the story of a lifetime - the unforgettable Sunday Times bestseller 'Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature' Guardian Nominated for the Women's Prize 2020 A STORY OF TWO SIBLINGS, THEIR CHILDHOOD HOME, AND A PAST THAT THEY CAN'T LET GO. Book cover of Tom Lake

Monica Parker ❤️ loved this book because...

This book hit a few nerves about how our past doesn't always carry us it to the future. It's a story about youth and naiveté and then the well measured switch into adulthood and parenting.

Meryl Streep was the reader and at no time could I hear her voice. Her gift to become others was incredible and always had the ability to lead me to whatever place or emotion was intended.

Book cover of Run Towards the Danger: Confrontations with a Body of Memory

Monica Parker ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved Sarah Polley's voice. Vulnerable, open, and always honest. It's difficult to dive into one's youth and see the love and the damage that well-meaning humans can do to each other.

This story also brings us to Sarah's insight and winsome that is constantly reflected in the resilient woman she became... That she had to become to survive her show biz family, the pressure of being a pretty child actress, costly being told/often manipulated into doing what she inherently didn't want to do an then all made worse as she became a desirable young woman. Her strength and intelligence shone and inspired.

What is this book about?

*A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice*Named a Most-Anticipated Book of 2022 by Entertainment Weekly, Lit Hub, and AV Club*

Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director, and actor Sarah Polley’s Run Towards the Danger explores memory and the dialogue between her past and her present

These are the most dangerous stories of my life. The ones I have avoided, the ones I haven’t told, the ones that have kept me awake on countless nights. As these stories found echoes in my adult life, and then went another, better way…

Getting Waisted: A Survival Guide to Being Fat in a Society that Loves Thin

By Monica Parker,

Book cover of Getting Waisted: A Survival Guide to Being Fat in a Society that Loves Thin

What is my book about?

Getting Waisted bridges the divide between serial dieter's survival guide and memoir, taking readers on a hilariously funny yet bumpy ride from chubby baby to fit and fabulous adult. Getting Waisted is the ultimate anti-diet book. Monica is not an advocate of being fat but she is an advocate of being good enough as we are. Her story is funny and painful. It’s ultimately a love story and also deeply inspirational.

Monica Parker is an actor, writer and producer in theater, television and film; most notably she co-wrote All Dogs Go to Heaven. She is currently starring in her insightful and funny one-woman show, Sex, Pies & a Few White Lies, which premiered in 2012. Monica has just completed two features already under option, and has a recurring role on Syfy’s “Defiance.” Monica lives with her longtime husband and saint, Gilles.
