Book cover of Shōgun

Jevan Pradas ❤️ loved this book because...

The TV show won a record 18 Emmy's. But as great as it was, the show was merely the cliff notes to the immersive world of 17th century Japan that James Claville's epic novel illuminates for us. Japan has always had a special fascination to the western world, so exotic and traditional in their culture, yet in many ways far more advanced than us. This was even more true back then, as we dive into a story of samurai and ninja, pageantry, and at times baffling customs (sepukko as an honor?).

The book functions not just as a great adventure story, but as a mystery. The machinations of the ingenious characters slowly brought to light. There are so many moments of Ah! That's why he did that. It's hard to know what Claville pulled form actual history, but whether a creation of his own or not, the way he weaves the back and forth feints and manipulations of the characters, is awe-inspiring.

Don't feel daunted by this books 1200 pages, you'll be so engrossed that by the end you will be reading it while wearing a kimono and a samurai sword you bought off Amazon.

By James Clavell,

Why should I read it?

10 authors picked Shōgun as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

'Clavell never puts a foot wrong . . . Get it, read it, you'll enjoy it mightily' Daily Mirror

This is James Clavell's tour-de-force; an epic saga of one Pilot-Major John Blackthorne, and his integration into the struggles and strife of feudal Japan. Both entertaining and incisive, SHOGUN is a stunningly dramatic re-creation of a very different world.

Starting with his shipwreck on this most alien of shores, the novel charts Blackthorne's rise from the status of reviled foreigner up to the hights of trusted advisor and eventually, Samurai. All as civil war looms over the fragile country.

'I can't…

Book cover of What, Why, How: Answers to Your Questions About Buddhism, Meditation, and Living Mindfully

Jevan Pradas 👍 liked this book because...

I've spend over a year of my life in the halls and cabins of Bhavana Society. A meditation monastery in the forest of West Virginia, where its abbot is the most senior and respected Buddhist monk living in the United States.

In "What, Why, How" Bhante G. as he is affectionately called answers the most common questions you would hear if you spent a few months there on retreat. I enjoyed the format and style of this book, more of a Q&A than a thesis. In this way you get a sense of the great masters playful personality. He once said, "If I hadn't been a monk, I would have been a comedian". There is no dryness here, but he still manages to answer the questions with thoroughness.

Book cover of Hiking with Nietzsche: On Becoming Who You Are

Jevan Pradas ❤️ loved this book because...

"I promised myself, I would never teach my students Nietzsche", quipped one of my philosophy professors in college. Nietzsche was so engaging, but so misunderstood. Reading Nietzsche was in short, dangerous.

In search of a climate that might soothe his poor health, and inspiration for his writing, Nietzsche took to hiking around the alps. "All great thoughts are conceived while walking", he once said. Our author, John Kaag, travels to Switzerland to retrace Nietzsche's hikes and teach us about the great and controversial thinker. This book serves as a wonderful introduction to the thoughts of the philosopher.

People often ask for recommendations on what to read by Nietzsche, and the truth is I didn't know where to point them. He published many books, often very dense, and to find the gems within you have to weave your way through obscure debates on ancient philology. Now I'll simply point them to this book.

By John Kaag,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Hiking with Nietzsche as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Hiking with Nietzsche: Becoming Who You Are is a tale of two philosophical journeys - one made by John Kaag as an introspective young man of nineteen, the other seventeen years later, in radically different circumstances: he is now a husband and father, and his wife and small child are in tow. Kaag sets off for the Swiss peaks above Sils Maria where Nietzsche wrote his landmark work Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Both of Kaag's journeys are made in search of the wisdom at the core of Nietzsche's philosophy, yet they deliver him to radically different interpretations and, more crucially, revelations…

By Jevan Pradas,

Book cover of The Awakened Ape: A Biohacker's Guide To Evolutionary Fitness, Natural Ecstasy, and Stress-Free Living

What is my book about?

*Finalist for Next Generation's Health and Wellness Book of the Year*

What secrets do Amazonian tribes, Himalayan hermits, and enlightened monks know about health and happiness that have been lost to the world today?

In The Awakened Ape Jevan Pradas uses evolutionary psychology to hack the human mind and body to answer the question: "How can we enjoy life to the fullest?" The results, while unexpected, are completely backed by science.

Perpetually bored, anxious, fatigued and overweight, modern society has failed to deliver the happiness it promised. The remedy, Jevan argues, is in a unique synthesis of a Paleolithic lifestyle and Buddhist meditation.

A sprawling journey, featuring Jevan's adventures with naked Amazonian tribes and retreats with enlightened monks to learn the secrets of optimal well-being, The Awakened Ape will teach you how to achieve deep states of bliss. All while shaping your body into the fit and healthy animal millions of years of evolution programmed you to be.

You will learn:
-How to meditate -- from instructions for the absolute beginner to techniques for deep states of ecstasy and awakening.
-How to eat the optimally healthy diet for both physical and mental health.
-How to train the attention span so you can be focused and efficient all day long.
-How to exercise so that is fun, enjoyable, and something you look forward to.
-How to get rid of the habit of negative thinking in just one week.
-How to live like a caveman in the modern world in order to get the most out of your genetics.
-How to properly go to the bathroom (Yes, you have been doing it wrong)And much, much, more..
