My favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Cat from Outer Space

Sherrie DeMorrow Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because I had it as a child, but never had a chance to read it.

Only 40+ years later, I came across the Disney film version and recalled the fact I *had* the novel of this all those years ago. I went and bought a copy on eBay and read the book, literally for the first time!

This cat, named Jake, was stranded on Earth and needed help repairing his ship. It was comical with the cat speaking to various characters through his collar and mind. I found it quite a unique story, and his interactions with the humans were lightly unnerving, but hilarious in some parts.

It was well worth reading it after all this time.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Oh Heavenly Dog

Sherrie DeMorrow Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because I had it as a child, and it was never read at the time.

I only just saw the film version and wanted to read the book. I had no trouble finding it, and got down to read it.

It is about a detective who, upon hearing about a murder, gets called out to investigate. He becomes the next victim and dies. He goes to heaven and, in order to solve his own murder, he returns to Earth as a dog.

It is refreshing to go back and read stuff one vaguely remembers, but the details are unclear. I had remembered something about this as a child, now more clear after seeing the book and film source

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of The Black Hole

Sherrie DeMorrow Why did I love this book?

I loved this book because I saw the film many times. I never read the novelization of it. The book was more detailed than the movie, and it fascinated me.

It was about a spaceship from Earth, the Palomino, which was investigating another ship, the Cygnus, that is too close to a black hole. The crew from the Palomino comes aboard Cygnus and meets its eccentric captain, Reinhardt, who has an entire robot army, as well as a tall, red automaton called Maximillian. The Palomino crew mates soon learn that Reinhardt has been out in space too long and wants to explore the black hole.

Eventually, everyone dies, much to their despair.

What is my book about?

Elias Huer had grown up to be a fine young man. His twin brother, Silas, had gone to the Saturn moon of Dracos to continue his education and learn about a new culture.

This was what he enjoyed as a child, to learn about different cultures of others, especially his own. Meanwhile, Elias was sent to the dreaded worlds of Anarchia and Arachnia, located beyond New Chicago.

As he braved their stormy environments, he met a young lady called Cindihan, with whom he intended to live in New Chicago. However, Elias had another dream. He wanted to fly out into space, and enjoy exploring its vastness. That dream was now about to come true, in this second installment of the Young Dr. Huer series.
