Book cover of Tom Lake

Debra H. Goldstein Why did I love this book?

The combination of the beauty of Ann Patchett’s use of words coupled with her handling of two delicate topics: a carefully interwoven reference to the Pandemic showing its impact on the characters without making it the focus of the story and the relationship between a mother telling a tale of an eventful time in her life to her daughters, makes this a must-read.

I didn’t want the book to end.

Book cover of They Come at Knight

Debra H. Goldstein Why did I love this book?

They Come at Knight is the second book in Yasmin Angloe’s Nena Knight trilogy. It continues the story of an intrepid assassin who will stop at nothing to protect her family.

Having enjoyed the first book in the series, I was particularly interested in how the story built and expanded the character of Nena. The sequel is well-paced. There is both a new tale to engage the reader and the character development of the protagonist goes well beyond the first book.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Lessons in Chemistry

Debra H. Goldstein Why did I love this book?

Lessons in Chemistry offers a new twist on a strong female character.

Elizabeth Zott is anything but your usual woman – challenged in her chemistry field, she ends up mixing her knowledge, her beliefs, and a touch of reality with a cooking show she hosts.

I particularly liked the new take on an old theme because I found the book raised many questions and ideas to discuss with friends, ranging from the glass ceiling to the character’s beliefs to whether persistence and achievement can come together.

An easy read but one that will leave the reader thinking.
