My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Left to Die: The Tragedy of the USS Juneau

Becky Van Vleet Why did I love this book?

As a baby boomer, I love all things WWII. I’d always heard about the five Sullivan brothers on the USS Juneau and their devastating demise. So naturally I was drawn to read Kurzman’s book.

Although extremely sorrowful, the author does an amazing job with creating an up close and personal account of this WWII tragedy. From unfathomed suffering and sacrifice of the survivors to the battles of ravenous sharks, I found this book to be gripping and hard to stop reading.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Butterfly Dreams

Becky Van Vleet Why did I love this book?

If you simply enjoy an honest, thoughtful, character-driven story, Butterfly Dreams will not disappoint. With tremendous appeal and an inspiring message of a middle-aged woman finding love again later in life, Bonnie Engstrom weaves charm, humor, and faith messages in a unique way.

I am a middle-aged woman myself, and I could truly relate to Betsy’s mindset and her persona. By the time I finished reading this book, I felt like I had become good friends with the main character, Betsy. Not only that, but my new “friendship” with Betsy is still lingering in my mind as I think about her journey.

But, when her kitchen blows up, he saves her life—over the phone! When daughter Brie shows up pregnant and abandoned by her husband, like Betsy’s husband, The Jerk, abandoned her when she was pregnant…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Road Trip Rescue

Becky Van Vleet Why did I love this book?

I am a grandmother (Nana) to nine kiddos, four of whom are middle schoolers. So, when I have an opportunity to read a book in the middle school genre, I grab it to see if it’s a book I’d like to add to our personal library for our grandchildren.

Road Trip Rescue did not disappoint. The themes of friendship, trust, and worthiness interlace with suspense and surprises, culminating in a story to take to heart. I’m always looking for action-filled books with wholesome messages to pique the curiosities of my middle-school-aged grandchildren, and Becca Wierwille’s book fits the bill!

Book cover of Babushka's Doll

Becky Van Vleet Why did they love this book?

My five-year-old granddaughter, Amara, loves for her Nana to read Polacco’s whimsical story of a mischievous bossy doll that comes to life.

A fun story for young children to learn a lesson about patience, Amara can relate to the main character, Natasha. After our reading time, we always have a meaningful follow-up discussion about the virtue of patience.

Then, after lunch, Natasha notices a doll sitting on Babushka's shelf...a doll Babushka tells Natasha she played with just once when she was a little girl. When Natasha plays with the doll while Babushka goes to the store for groceries, she discovers why once is enough with Babushka's doll...and finds out…

My grandson, Kenny, could not put this book down. He loves all animals and especially dogs.

Reading a true story about a dog born with no front legs and small in size as well as sick, Kenny’s heartstrings were pulled into Nubby’s story of obstacles and how the little dog overcame them with creativity, a lot of hard work, and love from his family.
