Why read it?

6 authors picked The False Prince as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

The False Prince surprised me. I feel silly saying that it took me a long time to cotton on to what was really going on (perhaps longer than others) but that was what actually made this story all the more enjoyable. When things finally made sense, they really, really made sense and I didn't mind all that I had to read through to get there.

If I were to compare it to another novel that didn't do it as well, The Queen's Assassin by Melissa de la Cruz is the perfect example. If you've read both, you'll see what I…

When my roommate suggested I read The False Prince, I did not expect to be drawn in and read the entire 5 book series in a week. What’s a sleep schedule?

Sage is the kind of character that can keep everyone guessing…including the reader, even though you are reading from his point of view. He is guarded and defiant. As he is being sculpted to be what someone else wants him to be, he remains spitefully himself, even when it might mean his demise. He might not technically be a spy, but he embodies everything I love about the…

This is a middle grade fantasy where several boys are chosen to attempt to impersonate a missing prince. Only one of them is going to win the spot as false prince and take the throne, which is the perfect stage for all of them to hate each other and then become friends. It’s also the perfect way for them to start to wonder why they’re supposed to be impersonating a prince anyway. They’re going to have to work together (and sometimes fight each other as well as their own aspirations and pride) to beat the real bad guy.

New book alert!

Why am I passionate about this?

I've always loved fiction, fantasy, and adventure stories. Growing up in the Star Wars generation, I was seven when A New Hope was released at the theaters. Living in the hollows of West Virginia there weren’t libraries close by, and movies were a great, though seldom, treat. Suggestive material and cursing was not something that we saw in books or movies growing up in a more simple period of time. I still thoroughly enjoy many well-written, clean, books or shows. As an active member of the body of Christ, I now serve with my writing, and hope that kids of all ages can enjoy epic fantasy and adventure books from a clean and wholesome perspective.

What is my book about?

Finding Family, Discovery, Destiny. This is what nineteen-year-old Bain Brinley is searching for.

In his homeland, far in the mountains, he stepped into what he could only describe as a time-portal and landed in a strange land known as Egypt. Then he falls through another portal during a storm, only to end up in another world known as Harilhia. Here, he soon discovers a creature he knew from home. He was back, but it wasn't Zanchier.

Can he find his family, and figure out what the Creator wanted him to do with time-travel?

What is this book about?

Where was he and how did he get here?

Nineteen-year-old Bain Brinley has just inadvertently stepped into a time portal and was deposited into a world like none he had ever seen before. He turned to go back through the portal and back to Zanchier to find his family, only to find the portal gone. Now, Bain must face this strange, new, world without anyone else on whom he can depend.

As he gazes out over the hot, dry, desert climate at the large pyramid shaped structures, he is unsure where to go. He is soon thrust into a strange,…

What I love about these books is the tongue-in-cheek narration and the snappy dialogue. What my twelve-year-old likes best is the MC’s fearlessness and the pop-off-the-page settings (see mansions with secret rooms and salt-crusted pirate ships). It’s a fun fantasy series that has recently ballooned from three books to five (or more?).

If you like stories that keep you guessing, then Jennifer Nielsen’s Ascendance series was written for you. Featuring a clever, likable protagonist (Sage, a thief from the streets, recruited into a plot to impersonate the dead Prince Jaron and steal the throne), the first book, The False Prince, is a slow burn of secrets, lies, and conspiracies—and totally worth the price of admission on its own.

If you’ve read Kingdom of Secrets, you know I love a story with rich political intrigue, in which the characters are so complex and nuanced that it’s impossible to pin them down as simply “good” or “bad.” In The False Prince, Nielsen keeps us in suspense until the very end as to the motives and intentions of her characters, which results in several big, shocking reveals.

From Christyne's list on for children with mind-blowing plot twists.
