Why read it?
4 authors picked Dog Man as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
This book is immensely entertaining due to its blend of slapstick humor, imaginative storytelling, and simple illustrations. In my mind, no other cartoonist or illustrator can convey so much silliness with so few lines!
Pilkey’s creation of a half-dog, half-man hero who finds himself in hilarious predicaments is a simple but genius premise. There are all kinds of wonderful supporting characters, too, like Evil Petey and cute Cat Kid. The comic book style format, drawn by mischief-makers Harold and George, adds to the charm here.
Clever wordplay, puns, and relatable themes of friendship, bravery, and perseverance will show you why…

Every kid I’ve met loves these books. EVERY kid. And I don’t know that I’ve ever laughed so hard at a book as I do at the Dog Man books—yes, me—a full-grown adult.
Dog Man has the head of a dog, the body of an adult, and a heart for fighting crime. Will he be able to resist the call of the wild to answer the call of duty? These graphic novels are colorful and wild, simple and complex all at once.

From Kristin's list on books for kids told from a dog’s point of view.
In a word: Irreverent. With Dav Pilkey, humor is king and just about anything goes. A dog’s head fused to a policeman’s body? Makes perfect sense to a child, and to me for that matter.
I love that Dav created these characters when he was in grade school, which is probably why it connects with kids so well. But Pilkey’s kitchen sink sensibility wouldn’t work if he wasn’t such a great storyteller too.

My son got my grandson a box of the first three Dog Man books for his birthday. A dog's head on a human body working as a policeman. My grandson was furious at the time. He did not want sucky books. When the party was over and the birthday boy was in bed over tired and grumpy, grandpa took out the offending books and start to read aloud. They are so silly, bad spelling but funny, funny to a 6-year-old boy. I actually found it hilarious too. My grandson laughed his head off. And that is why I recommend these…
