Book cover of Matrescence

Ted Fleming ❤️ loved this book because...

I stared at the book jacket; and knew I was about to “get schooled,” as I had never heard of the word “matrescence.” A masterful work that blends personal narrative with the latest scientific insights, Lucy Jones offers an intimate portrait of “matrescence,” the process of becoming a mother. Jones guides the reader through the physical, psychological, and social changes a women experiences from pregnancy, to childbirth, to motherhood.

Jones bravely exposes the myths of mothering as natural, instinctual, and always happy with the reality that accompanying joy are sleep deprivation, loneliness, and isolation. You learn that adult caregiver brains change even without the experience of pregnancy, adapting in response to the demands of an infant.

Jones forces the reader to recognize society’s role and responsibility to mothers and their children. It touches the heart and gives you fresh eyes to see the world.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Superconvergence

Ted Fleming ❤️ loved this book because...

The science and technology for radically reshaping our lives exists, but the frameworks to handle its power does not. That is one of the main themes, and warnings of Jamie Metzl’s book Superconvergence.

Are you ready to eat a steak grown synthetically in a lab? How about having your genome sequenced to tailor medicines for your body? How about using spider silk, which is stronger than Kevlar, to manufacture bullet-proof vests?

I love this book because it chronicles the integration of science, technology, history, politics, international affairs, culture, and biology to reengineer our modern world. Every consumption, healthcare, dietary, social, and political decision we make has the potential to make our world a better or worse place. Metzl challenges nations, organizations, and people to work together to build the world we want.

What is this book about?

A bold, inspiring, and multi-disciplinary exploration of cutting-edge human knowledge and capabilities-and how to harness their awesome, but terrifying potential

In Superconvergence, leading futurist and OneShared.World founder Jamie Metzl explores how genome sequencing, gene editing, artificial intelligence, and other technologies are not only changing our lives, but catalyzing each other in radical and accelerating ways. These technologies have the potential to improve our health, feed billions of people, supercharge our economies, and store essential information for millions of years, but can also-if we are not careful-do immeasurable harm.

The challenge we face is that while the ability to engineer the…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

Ted Fleming ❤️ loved this book because...

James McBride puts us in the center of a small, diverse Pennsylvania town with the Jewish-owned Heaven and Earth Grocery store as its center. McBride makes each character come to life with a rich backstory that stands both on its own and integrates with others to make a rich tapestry of love, death, kidnapping, and survival.

McBride artfully shares the experience of Jews and Blacks in early twentieth-century America, their barriers and the grit and determination needed to survive. I loved the love story of Moshe and Chona. The triumph of Dodo and Monkey Pants, and the humanity of a community willing to risk everything in the name of truth and justice.
