My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Absolution Blues

Sarena Straus ❤️ loved this book because...

Generally speaking, I don't read horror novels (I'm such a chicken), but I loved this author's previous book, "Dirt Road Home." As this author is known for horror, I figured I'd give his latest ghost story, "Absolution Blues," a shot. This is great psychological horror. I enjoyed reading something outside of my usual comfort zone. It's fast paced and interesting--it definitely got me curious about reading more horror! I liked the aspect of being in the main character's head and unsure whether what he was experiencing was real or imagined. Very creative and well-written!

Book cover of The Midnight Library

Sarena Straus ❤️ loved this book because...

The basic premise of this novel is not totally new - it's about getting to relive your life and having the chance to do things differently. However, I enjoyed reading it very much and escaping into the MCs many realities. It's extremely well written and enjoyable!

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Israel

Sarena Straus ❤️ loved this book because...

Tishby tells the history of Israel and its people objectively and by weaving her personal story into the narrative. While is sometimes can feel a little self-congratulatory, it was refreshing to have an objective perspective on the history and founding of Israel and Zionism in light of all of the misinformation being spread about the country. Israel's history is very long, complicated and nuanced. Tishby does an excellent job of laying things out clearly and making the millennias-long story digestible.
