Book cover of The Women

Karen McMillan ❤️ loved this book because...

The Women is both beautiful and brutal, breathtaking and insightful. It examines sensitively the infamous Vietnam War, shining a light on the women who served in this conflict. It brings to life the real-life women and their heroic service to their country in extreme conditions, but also the tragedy of their homecoming and the very real problems Vietnam vets faced on their return. The central character, Frankie, is unforgettable. This is an astonishingly powerful novel, one that both horrifies and uplifts at the same time. The Women is extraordinary!

What is this book about?

The missing. The forgotten. The brave… The women.

From master storyteller Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds, comes the story of a turbulent, transformative era in America: the 1960s. The Women is that rarest of novels—at once an intimate portrait of a woman coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided by war and broken by politics, of a generation both fueled by dreams and lost on the battlefield.

“Women can be heroes, too.”

When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these unexpected…

Book cover of The Lost Lover

Karen McMillan ❤️ loved this book because...

This is the latest instalment in the utterly addictive Wild Isle series, set on the remote island of St Kilda, off the coast of Scotland.
The Lost Lover is epic, sweeping historical fiction at its most enthralling. If you read this, you will immediately want to devour the others in the series, The Last Summer and The Stolen Hours. The characters are compelling, the plot page-turning and atmospheric.

Turbulent Threads

By Karen McMillan,

Book cover of Turbulent Threads

What is my book about?

A young woman's courage can change her world.

Spanning the last decade of the 19th century, this page-turning saga explores the healing power of friendship while celebrating the pivotal role women played in this turbulent era.

New Zealand, Dunedin, 1890: Suddenly orphaned, Greer Gillies is thrust into a life of servitude at Larnach Castle, far from her dreams of literature, fashion, and music. Yet, as grief weighs heavily on her, she discovers that her journey is just beginning—a journey that mirrors the transformative spirit of the decade for women’s progress.

Greer’s story is counterpointed by William Larnach's real-life troubles later in life, including impending financial ruin, his marriage to his third wife, Constance, which resulted in scandalous rumours, and tragedy within parliament buildings.

Through newfound friendships and the strength of a supportive community of Scots, Irish, Lebanese and Chinese immigrants living in the infamous Devil’s Half-Acre, Greer must overcome the many challenges that come her way. She navigates heartbreak, betrayal and social upheavals, embodying remarkable resilience and courage. She dares to dream, love, and find her place in a rapidly changing world in a story infused with fashion and music.

In this compelling tale of hope and determination, Greer shows us that even in the darkest times, the future holds the promise of something greater.
