❤️ loved this book because...
I loved this delightful romp through the 1800s English countryside... but what's that? Is it a dog peering out at us from beneath the bushes, or could it perhaps be something else?
But dragons don't exist. Right? They are merely mythical beasts of legend and story?
Or at least, that's what Edith has always believed. Until her family inherits the mysterious Wormwood Abbey... an inheritance they don't really want and have no intention of keeping.
Or at least... that's what they think.
But there are secrets in Ormdale. And there are responsibilities that can be inherited along with land and buildings. And even though Edith is pragmatic and fairly set in her ways and perfectly content being the model clergyman's daughter (I mean, besides being the author of popular detective novels she writes on the sly under a pen name), what she thinks and what she believes might not be entirely accurate.
And if she's not careful, she just might fall in love.
With Wormwood Abbey and creatures that don't... shouldn't... exist. Not Simon, of course. Never Simon. Heavens! She definitely has no intention of falling in love with HIM.
Or at least... that's what she thinks.
This book absolutely swept me off my feet and devoured me, body and soul. I'm picky about stories told in first person, but I love Edith (the narrator) so much that I forget I'm not just sitting with a dear friend over coffee hearing their adventures first hand. The story is beautifully told and brilliantly written. And it has dragons, my friends. All sorts of dragons, and I love them.

As a Victorian clergyman’s daughter, Edith Worms has seen everything — until a mythical salamander tumbles out of the fireplace into her lap.
When a letter arrives from estranged relatives, Edith is swept away to a crumbling Gothic abbey in the wilds of Yorkshire. Wormwood Abbey isn't just full of curious beasts and ancient family secrets: there’s also a tall, dark, and entirely too handsome neighbour who is strangely reluctant for her to leave.
An unexpected bond with her prickly cousin Gwendolyn gives Edith a reason to stay in this strange world — especially when it turns out that Edith…
