I was so captivated by The Night Circus! It's a slightly older book and I can't believe it took me so long to read it, but I'm so glad I did. The world Morgenstern creates is so evocative and vivid, I can see it all in my mind's eye so clearly. It was quirky, and dark, and sumptuous, and thrilling. The love story within it is like no other that I've read. As an author, I came away from this book deeply inspired!

As an author of magic-realism romances, they're always my top choice to read as well. My absolute favourite that I read this year was The Seven-Year Slip by Ashley Poston. The characters (a book publicist and a chef, who live seven years apart!) are adorable and relatable, the New York co-op apartment setting is to die for, and the plot has real emotional depth and a swoony love story. This is the kind of book I'd love to see made into a movie. Highly recommend for all you magic-realism romance lovers!

Although I'm a huge reader (and writer!) of magic-realism romances - time slip/travel/loop, alternate realities, etc - I've never been a paranormal romance reader and have tended to stay away from vampire/werewolf/ghost/witch romances. But I was convinced to read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, and I'm so glad I did! It was truly the most heartwarming book I've read this year. It's less about the witch being a witch and more like found family in a quirky household, plus there's a handsome, grumpy Irish librarian as a love interest to make it really interesting! Utterly charming, funny, and sweet - and with a couple of sexy moments for good measure. I will be more openminded about witchy stories from now on! Read on audiobook, and the narrator was totally fabulous, too.
