My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Bluebird, Bluebird

Andrew Welsh-Huggins ❤️ loved this book because...

The character of Texas Ranger Darren Mathews felt authentic and original. He comes across as a flawed human being trying to do his best with multiple obstacles in his way, some placed before him, others of his own making. Secondarily, I loved Locke's descriptions of eastern Texas. She really put in the setting.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Gatekeeper

Andrew Welsh-Huggins ❤️ loved this book because...

Bryne has created a brilliant new lone wolf protagonist with the epic name of Desmond Aloysius Limerick ("Dez" to his friends), a freelance operative with a tossed salad UK background (is he Irish? Scottish? English?) and mad, MacGyver-like skills that speak to a mysterious military background. He's also funny, observant, and fiercely loyal. Really enjoyed being in his world.

James Byrne's The Gatekeeper introduces Dez Limerick in the most anticipated thriller in years.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Silent Wife

Andrew Welsh-Huggins ❤️ loved this book because...

I'm a huge fan of Karin Slaughter and especially her Will Trent series; along with Michael Connelly, I think she writes the most compelling and accurate "warts and all" police procedurals today. This book, about a serial rapist who has eluded law enforcement's notice for years, bears all the Slaughter hallmarks: a dark, dark plot; deeply researched medical procedure and scenes; razor-sharp dialogue; and gripping narrative.

Sick to Death

By Andrew Welsh-Huggins,

Book cover of Sick to Death

What is my book about?

Private eye Andy Hayes faces the most personal investigation of his career when an adult daughter he never knew he had hires him to investigate the fatal hit-and-run accident that killed her mother in suburban Columbus, Ohio. Hayes must juggle the complexities of that investigation; a subplot in which he finds himself the suspect in an attempted art museum theft; and the realities of interacting with a new family member who's not exactly sure she's on board with Hayes as her father.
