My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Carrie Soto Is Back

Tobias Madden Why did I love this book?

This was my first TJR, and I read the rest of her books in quick succession this year because I loved Carrie Soto so much!

I’m a big tennis fan, so the setting was an instant win for me. I also loved the alternate timeline of 1980/90s tennis history and the characters that came along with it. I connected with the protagonist on such a deep level, and I thought her struggle for perfection was incredibly relatable, not just for sportspeople (I’m certainly not one of those!) but for everyone. This book was an ace down the line, for sure!

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Yellowface

Tobias Madden Why did I love this book?

This book was utterly compelling in every way, and I know it’s on many people’s “best books of 2023” lists.

It was kind of like watching a slow-motion train wreck, but instead of a train, it was an author’s career (and consequently, her personal life) crumbling before your eyes. The commentary on the publishing industry was painfully accurate, and the characterization of the unlikable narrator was true perfection.

Best to go into this one without knowing too much. It’s a wild ride!

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Spare

Tobias Madden Why did I love this book?

I don’t read many memoirs, but I found Harry’s story incredibly captivating.

I decided to pick it up after reading an essay by his ghostwriter, and I’m so glad I did. Often heartbreaking, but filled with lightness and humor too, it’s a book that I genuinely couldn’t put down. Harry’s journey made me laugh, cringe, cry, and want to scream at the page. Brilliant.

Why should I read it?

7 authors picked Spare as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow-and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness-and,…
