Book cover of The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Canyon

Merri Melde Why did I love this book?

I love reading about a good outdoor adventure that is something I would never attempt in a place I would love to be, one that has me on the edge of my seat and gets my heart thumping, with real people I can relate to. This book has it all for me.

Taking place in one of America's most iconic outdoor regions, the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, this book is not just about the thrill of white-water rafting (which it certainly has!). Fedarko gets to the heart of the intrepid adventurers who fiercely defend the outdoors, uphold traditions, and take on a raging river when Nature is at its wildest.

This book gave me wild rafting dreams at night and inspired me to set a goal of hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim this winter!

What is this book about?

From one of Outside magazine’s “Literary All-Stars” comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983.

In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history. In the midst of this crisis, the decision to launch a small wooden dory named “The Emerald Mile” at the head of the…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Elsewhere: One Woman, One Rucksack, One Lifetime of Travel

Merri Melde Why did I love this book?

Rosita's travel stories are beautifully written, and they reinforce my belief that the world really is a small place, and through shared experiences with different people in places elsewhere, even if we don’t speak the same language, we can relate in some intimate way with everybody that we meet.

I have the same fierce urge as her to travel and discover new places and cultures around the globe, and I have spent over two years doing that. It’s about the journeys, the amazing places you see, the people you meet, and the personal growth you undergo when you get out and explore the world.

I’ve had some of these same travel experiences - both good and bad - like a dangerous bus ride or places of gut-wrenching beauty.

From her first life-changing solo trip to Australia as a young graduate, Rosita Boland was enthralled by travel. In the last thirty years she has visited some of the most remote parts of the globe carrying little more than a battered rucksack and a diary.

Documenting nine journeys from nine different moments in her life, Elsewhere reveals how exploring the world - and those we meet along the way - can dramatically shape the course of a person's life. From death-defying bus journeys through Pakistan to witnessing the majestic icescapes of Antarctica to putting herself back together in Bali,…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Chasing Dreams: The True Story of the Youngest Female Tevis Cup Champion

Merri Melde Why did I love this book?

Even if I didn’t love horses and endurance riding, I would be captivated by Sonoma Blakeley’s journey toward becoming the youngest winner of the famous 100-mile Tevis Cup Endurance ride. Her passionate love of horses, her focused dedication to training, and her adventurous rides are all familiar to me.

While so many teens are distracted by other things in life, Sanoma had a dream that she fiercely followed until she accomplished it. I love how she appreciated and relied on her family to help get her there. It makes an inspiring story, culminating in the exciting, gripping 14 hours and 20 minutes of her pivotal Tevis Cup ride.

And how can you not root for a girl with a horse named Goober?

Chasing Dreams: The True Story of the Youngest Female Tevis Cup Champion is the incredible, action-packed memoir of Sanoma Blakeley's 2019 Tevis Cup championship, won while riding her beloved horse Goober, and the tale of how she became the youngest woman to ever become a Tevis Cup champion. Book cover of Tevis Cup Magic: Taking on the World’s Toughest 100 Mile Endurance Ride

What is my book about?

Every horse Endurance ride has challenges and difficulties, but the Tevis Cup has 100 miles. It's extreme, challenging, relentless, frantic, exhilarating, heart-breaking, exhausting, exasperating, beautiful, treacherous, insane, and exciting. I know first-hand because I experienced it!

Even though most Endurance riders consider the 100-mile Tevis Cup the Holy Grail of Endurance rides, it was never on my radar, as I never owned my Endurance horse. It was pure luck that a friend offered me her spare horse to ride at the last minute, a gallant gray gelding who knew the trail.

So I sat astride Quinn at the starting line of the Tevis Cup and set my gaze 100 miles down the trail, across the Sierra Nevada mountains, toward the finish line at Auburn.
