Book cover of The Creative Act: A Way of Being

Marty Kelley Why did I love this book?

This was one of the most powerful and inspirational books on the creative process I’ve ever read. I usually tend toward funny fiction, but an artist friend loaned me a copy.

I wasn’t even halfway through before I ordered my own copy. It’s a thoughtful, brilliant collection of very short essays on every aspect of the creative process.

It reads like a quiet Dharma talk from a wise Buddhist teacher. Each day, I would read one essay, and they never failed to get me to think about my own creative process in a different way.

It challenged my beliefs and habits and sent my creative journey down some very different paths.

What is this book about?

The #1 New York Times bestseller.

From the legendary music producer, a master at helping people connect with the wellsprings of their creativity, comes a beautifully crafted book many years in the making that offers that same deep wisdom to all of us.

"A gorgeous and inspiring work of art on creation, creativity, the work of the artist. It will gladden the hearts of writers and artists everywhere, and get them working again with a new sense of meaning and direction. A stunning accomplishment.” —Anne Lamott

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Nell & the Netherbeast

Marty Kelley Why did I love this book?

Adi is a friend and a terrific author. On top of being very funny, her books have a deeper way of connecting with the reader. She is masterful at plot development and creating authentic voices for each of her characters.

This book is a funny, supernatural jaunt with over-the-top villains, vengeful ghosts, useless adults, and a cat who is very clearly not actually a cat.

It’s an enjoyable read that kept me reading “Just one more chapter…” before shutting off the light and going to sleep.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Nell & the Netherbeast as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 9, 10, 11, and 12.

What is this book about?

The Netherbeast, a slinking creature with an overwhelming stench, impossibly charms young Nell. Befriending this shapeshifter propels Nell into an unforgettable summer. A beast, a haunting, a fire, and a basement that should be avoided at all costs are just part of the adventures Nell didn't ask for. This story is equal parts heart-pounding and heartwarming.

Twelve-year-old Nell Stoker loves animals. She's been working toward becoming a junior volunteer at her local animal shelter for what feels like forever. But now it's summertime, and her parents are making her go to her Aunt Jerry's old bed and breakfast in Deer…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Young Men in Spats

Marty Kelley Why did I love this book?

P.G. Wodehouse was a prolific British writer whose comic novels and short stories never fail to fill me with joy.

My grandfather introduced me to his works when I was in high school, and I've been a devoted reader for decades. I've read and reread dozens of his books over and over, and they always entertain.

His sublime use of language for comic effect is a wonder to behold, and there aren't many stories that don't make me laugh out loud a few times while reading them.

The plots are intricate and clever but based on simple stories where you always know everything will turn out all right, but you're never sure just how that will happen. Absolutely my favorite author of all time.

What is this book about?

Fans of P. G. Wodehouse's comic genius are legion, and their devotion to his masterful command of hilarity borders on obsession. Overlook happily feeds the obsession with four more antic selections from the master.

Blandings Castle is a collection of tales concerning Lord Emsworth and the Threepwood clan, while Jeeves in the Offing finds Bertie Wooster in yet another scrape-with the peerless Jeeves out of sight, on vacation! Poor Bertie nearly becomes unstuck! Young Men in Spats is Wodehouse at his most sparkling: stories concerning members of the inimitable Drones Club-they may be small of brain and short on cash…
