My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story

J.T. Hunter Why did I love this book?

As a fan of the band U2, I enjoyed learning about Bono and the band's background, how the band formed, and their rise to stardom.

What's particularly appealing about this book is that Bono doesn't sugarcoat anything and lets the reader be a fly on the wall for the story's events. He also includes plenty of self-deprecation and humor. In addition to being a fascinating read about the music, this book will appeal to those interested in father-son and mother-son relationships, as Bono lost his mother at a young age and struggled to have a good relationship with his father.

I plan to see U2 in Las Vegas this year, so this was a great way to "prep" for that experience!

What is this book about?

One of the greatest rock memoirs ever written and a Sunday Times bestseller now out in paperback - the honest, irreverent and powerfully entertaining life story of the U2 front-man.

Bono - artist, activist and the lead singer of Irish rock band U2 - has written his autobiography- honest and irreverent, intimate and profound, Surrender is the story of the remarkable life he's lived, the challenges he's faced and the friends and family who have shaped and sustained him - now out in paperback.

'When I started to write this book I was hoping to draw in detail what I'd…

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music

J.T. Hunter Why did I love this book?

I guess this was the year for reading books by musicians- lol. Dave Grohl is the drummer/lead singer for the Foo Fighters, and this book is packed full of great stories from his days with that band.

There are also stories from earlier in his life when he was the drummer for Nirvana in Seattle. Dave comes across as someone you'd enjoy hanging out with and a pretty nice guy to boot. In addition to his musical career, the book explores his strained father-son relationship and his great relationship with his mother. Is there something about musicians and their fathers?

Bono's book and this one seem to support that there is. All in all, it's a fun book with great gems of insight.

What is this book about?

So, I've written a book.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ('It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!'), I have decided to write these stories just as I have always done, in my own hand. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I've recorded and can't wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder

J.T. Hunter Why did I love this book?

I was a fan of Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and with the movie based on that book coming out very soon, I thought I’d give Grann’s latest book a read.

If you like history, maritime stories, or just a compelling look at human nature, then you’ll enjoy this story about a shipwreck and how the survivors devolved through desperation. Although not quite as good as Grann’s KOTFM, this is still definitely a worthwhile read.
