We Are Legion (We Are Bob)

This series is wildly popular, and I ran across it more than once. Finally, I had to read Book 1, even if the title does sound silly to me. But, as I discovered, it fits perfectly with humor and loads of sci-fi tropes. Read it for fun.

Don’t be fooled by the silly title; this book shows how I want to spend eternity. A guy has his consciousness uploaded to computers and then explores the universe. I want to see what is out there, but exploring such a vast space isn’t possible given the short time span of human life, so we need a technology like this.

This is the first of a four-part series that had me hooked from the first chapter. It is a science fiction book that seems so absurd yet so tantalizingly possible.

Bob is humanity’s last hope, and somehow, Bob, an otherwise unremarkable fellow, manages to become the prototype sentience of the future of the human species.

I love space opera, and this is space opera on an enormous scale from an author with an enormous imagination. It’s such an easy read that it works well as a palate cleanser between more intense non-fiction books.

Guy strikes it rich, splurges on cryogenically freezing his head then gets killed crossing the street. This is a story I can get behind! Bob is now a sentient AI—no body or external senses. This is a problem until he comes up with an innovative solution. Not only is this a book full of sharp and wacky humor, there’s a fantastic undercurrent of sci-fi thought experimentation—and this really resonated with me. What would it be like to be a sentient AI? Love to chuckle-snort while reading a good science fiction book? Then I highly recommend the Bobiverse series. While we’re all pretty familiar with sentient starships (i.e. Ancillary Justice and, of course, there’s Farscape), how about a software geek turned corpsicle turned reluctant, self-replicating starship as part of future Earth’s desperate race to control the universe? I absolutely adored the humor-wrapped science fiction of this captivating novel.
