The Elegant Universe
Book description
Brian Greene, one of the world's leading string theorists, peels away layers of mystery to reveal a universe that consists of eleven dimensions, where the fabric of space tears and repairs itself, and all matter-from the smallest quarks to the most gargantuan supernovas-is generated by the vibrations of microscopically tiny…
Why read it?
3 authors picked The Elegant Universe as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
After Bryson and Harari, Greene gives us a wonderful, focused, science-oriented summary of cosmology and particle physics written for the layperson. While relatively easy to understand, he deals with the huge issues of where our universe came from and what it’s made of. I love the way these three authors strive from different vantage points to educate us and introduce us to the most fundamental questions of human life.
From James' list on science vs. religion.
Theoretical physics, though might be the best way to explain and investigate our physical reality, could be very complicated to the extent that it became a synonym incomprehensible to some. In this book, Brian Greene explains the most complicated concepts in physics in an elegantly simple way that allows a 12-year-old kid to understand them perfectly well.
From Mahmoud's list on to understand humanity and the universe.
If you are going to get all nerdy and interested in alternative universes, parallel realities, etc. then you might as well look at the science behind it all. In no way am I saying that I fully understand superstring theory, but after reading this book I possibly understand it a little better than I did! Written in a non-mathematical way for the complete layman by a physicist who knows his stuff. This book demonstrates that some things are stranger than fiction, and that just maybe there are other versions of you out there who are reading this right now…
From Andy's list on on not getting lost in another bloody multiverse.
