Why read it?

3 authors picked Me as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

Another incredibly frank book that buzzed with energy and excitement from the outset.

Elton John has rightly become a legend of the music and cultural scene across the globe. His insights into what was often a world of excess are quite mind-blowing.

I loved Me from first to last, and it still amazes me how he survived it all!

Autobiographies by genuine A-listers can prove disappointing experiences, as the superstars in question tread delicately lest they puncture their carefully cultivated public images. Not so Sir Elton John, who in Me worked closely with Guardian writer Alexis Petridis to deliver a racy, rambunctious, scurrilous account of his serial misdoings. Everyone had always known that Elton John was doing crazy shit. Nobody had grasped that he was doing quite as much as this.

Elton drops celebrity names all over his book, and entertaining stories to go with them. There are many laugh-out-loud moments; one that stands out is when he confronts burglars in the middle of the night after thinking he has put his wig on straight. He has a typically British dry sense of humour, and he is surprisingly self-deprecating. He mixes up laughter with misery to give an overall 'feelgood' factor. A very readable autobiography.
