My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Taste of War

Tom Kratman ❤️ loved this book because...

Amidst all the histories of war, amidst the maneuvering armies, the carpet bombings, the artillery strikes, everyone forget about the ultimate aspect of logistics, keeping the troops and the people fed...or failing to. Lizzie Collingham fills that gap, and brilliantly.

What is this book about?

A New York Times Notable Book of 2012

Food, and in particular the lack of it, was central to the experience of World War II. In this richly detailed and engaging history, Lizzie Collingham establishes how control of food and its production is crucial to total war. How were the imperial ambitions of Germany and Japan - ambitions which sowed the seeds of war - informed by a desire for self-sufficiency in food production? How was the outcome of the war affected by the decisions that the Allies and the Axis took over how to feed their troops? And how…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Battleship Commander

Tom Kratman ❤️ loved this book because...

Ching (that's not how they originally spelled it) was probably the finest battleship admiral ever produced by the United States Navy. It's about time he got recognition for that.

What is this book about?

This is the first-ever biography of Vice Admiral Willis A. Lee Jr., who served a key role during World War II in the Pacific. Recognizing the achievements and legacy of one of the war's top combat admirals has been long overdue until now.

It has a great deal to say about how to put civilization back together once you've lost it. Since we may be losing ours...

By Eric H. Cline,

2 authors picked After 1177 B.C. as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

In this gripping sequel to his bestselling 1177 B.C., Eric Cline tells the story of what happened after the Bronze Age collapsed-why some civilizations endured, why some gave way to new ones, and why some disappeared forever

"A landmark book: lucid, deep, and insightful. . . . You cannot understand human civilization and self-organization without studying what happened on, before, and after 1177 B.C."-Nassim Nicholas Taleb, bestselling author of The Black Swan

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

1919: Romanov Rising

By Tom Kratman, Kacey Ezell, Justin Watson

Book cover of 1919: Romanov Rising

What is my book about?

No imperial family stuck in a little out of the way town, with no road, rail or river connection for most of the year, can be counted as important. Thus, already, with the corpses left from their rescue still being collected, Tsarina Tatiana, the First of Her Name, is striking out for better position. A battle must be fought against a seemingly overwhelming force of Bolsheviks, just to hold on to their tiny Tobolsk, in Siberia. Yekaterinburg, rich in precious metals must be taken to fund the war, with only a dozen men available to take it. The beautiful nun and imperial aunt, Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna, and her companions must be rescued from a vile fate. Also, the lines must be laid out for the various fractious anti-Bolshevik forces to unite under the Imperial Crown. Finally, the two possible successors, Maria Alexandovna and her sister, Anastasia, must be whisked to safety in the United States and the United Kingdom, where one of them will learn love not just of a man, but of his people, his country, and their way of life.

Clever spying, desperate battles, subtle diplomacy, terrorism, counter-terrorism, propaganda, and romance: the campaign to defeat the Bolsheviks and rescue Holy Russia from a dark and terrible fate continues.
