Book cover of James

Mary Jo Manzanares ❤️ loved this book because...

A re-telling of the classic Huck Finn story, this version is told through the viewpoint of Jim, the enslaved man referenced in the classic. This version challenged what I thought I knew, including whether or not Jim and Huck were even friends. I'll be going back to re-read the original.

Book cover of What's Next

Mary Jo Manzanares ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved the television series The West Wing, and watch the complete seven seasons, start to finish, every election year. I listened to the audiobook, read by two women who portrayed characters on the series, and enjoyed the backstage dishing about what went into making the show, cast secrets, and fun anecdotes. But what I enjoyed even more was learning more about the dedication to public service that people working in the White House have - both the fictional characters and their real life counterparts. Public service, for all the disdain heaped upon it lately, is a noble undertaking with an enduring legacy. This book took me back to that.
