This is a book of poetry, not my usual reading material. I was engaged from the first poem to the last.
The range of emotions evoked was what most impressed me about this book. From pain and loss, through appreciation of beauty to laugh out loud humour, this is a collection of poems about lived experience.
Strongly recommended for non-poetry readers especially.
This is a very unusual, non-fiction book.
James Crawford travelled around Scotland explorable lost and forgotten structures (man made and natural) that had a function in the past. These range from Viking shipyards, through massive water dams and lime kilns to walls built to coral herds of deer.
Each of the structures is presented as a puzzle or a mystery, and the purposed of each is slowly revealed in clear and engaging writing style. The photography is also excellent
This is a simple, true story, very well told.
A dog is spooked and runs away. Murphy’s owners go looking for him and try to find the dog and bring him home. Simple, right? Not as simple as it seems.
This book reminded me of another great book: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The author’s determination, ingenuity and love of the dog all come through strongly in the writing. I was engaged with the search for Murphy from the first page, and by half way through the book, I felt that I was out searching for him too!
Yes, I know it’s only a dog, but if you’ve ever had the experience described in the book you’ll know that it’s more than just a pet.
