My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Ghost Therapy

Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved Ghost Therapy by Mark Rosendorf for several reasons. One, it's a good story. Although it can be considered a young adult or teen read, I'm eclectic in my reading. If the author tells a good story, I'll read any novel. The characters come alive in the work, especially teenage Sam and Mr. Copeland the counselor.
The setting of a high school rings true as does the issues with bullying, which is very real for today's teens.
The twist in this tale is that Sam dies early in the novel and haunts Pinedale High School. After decades of death, Sam encounters a new counselor who all but steals the spotlight.
I won't give any spoilers but it's an engaging read and first of a new line coming from The Wild Rose Press.

What is this book about?

Pinedale Central High School is rumored to be haunted. For fifteen-year-old Sam Anderson, his haunting comes from the bullying he suffers each day within the school's walls. Sam doesn't believe the rumors, not until he meets Jessica, a former Pinedale student who died over one hundred years ago. No one can see or hear her except for Sam. Jessica convinces Sam to stand up to his bully. Unfortunately, the confrontation ends in tragedy. Now Sam is one of the ghosts no one can see or hear. At least not until he meets a former military operative, now Pinedale's newest Guidance…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Sawmill Book Club

Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy ❤️ loved this book because...

I loved The Sawmill Book Club because, like all Carolyn Brown's novels, it has a distinct sense of the real world. Brown lives in Oklahoma, next door to my home state of Missouri. She writes about people you feel like you could sit down and have a cup of coffee or a beer with.
Libby O'Dell moves to the very tiny place of Sawmill to work temporarily in an antique store. She grew up in the businesses but until now, has rejected it for other pursuits. From the time she arrives, however, she likes life in the new place. Benny, her boss, isn't the old man she expected and the neighbors across the road soon become more like family than friends.
LIbby's search to belong somewhere and to find her identity is relatable to everyone.

What is this book about?

A restless woman discovers the comforts of small-town Texas―and more―in a bighearted novel about the next chapters in life by New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown.

Unsure of the future but ready for risks, Libby O’Dell trades big-city life for whatever the back roads hold. In this case it’s the small community of Sawmill, Texas, where Libby’s taken a temporary job putting an antique store in order. Her new boss, Benny Taylor, a handsome charmer with a three-legged dog named Elvis, isn’t a bad change of scenery, either.

Across the street Benny’s surrogate grandmothers―the widows Minilee and Opal―are ready…

Book cover of Lightning

Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy ❤️ loved this book because...

This is one of Dean Koontz's older works but I found it to be engrossing and hard to put down.
It's a complicated story involved a widowed author, her extremely bright son, and a one time Nazi who has traveled through time more than once to make a positive difference in Laura Shane's life.
It's intense, it's emotional, and it's hard to guess how and where it will end.
