Book cover of Murder Your Employer

Kimberly Baer ❤️ loved this book because...

Imagine a Hogwarts for would-be murderers, a secret academy whose students (adults only) study poisons, not potions, and wield weapons instead of wands. Author Rupert Holmes has taken this premise and run with it, and the result is an entertaining tale set in a world so vivid, I feel as if I’ve walked the academy’s campus. The story is told from the alternating perspectives of three students, and despite my moral opposition to murder, I couldn’t help rooting for them. (Yes! Do it! Kill those jerks who’ve made your lives so miserable!) With its intricate plot, snappy dialogue, and clever wordplay, Murder Your Employer was for me a refreshing respite from election-year madness.

What is this book about?

A New York Times bestseller! From Edgar Award–winning novelist, playwright, and story-songwriter Rupert Holmes comes a diabolical thriller with a killer concept: The McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, “a fantasy academy laid out like a combination of Hogwarts, Downton Abbey, and a White Lotus–style resort” (Los Angeles Times) dedicated to the art of murder where students study how best to “delete” their most deserving victim.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Husbands

Kimberly Baer ❤️ loved this book because...

I [heart] weird plots.

In this delightful magical realism tale, Lauren, an unmarried woman, is dumbfounded when her attic starts churning out men claiming to be her husband—and the photos on her phone support their claims. Lauren quickly learns that she can get rid of any husband who doesn’t measure up by simply sending him back to the attic, where he will promptly be replaced by a new hubby.

This quirky story had me laughing out loud, but it also made me think about relationships. Should you settle for a romantic partner who meets most of your criteria? Or do you keep searching for someone better? These are the questions Lauren grapples with as she test-drives hundreds of husbands, getting herself into all sorts of hilarious predicaments along the way.

Book cover of Baby X

Kimberly Baer ❤️ loved this book because...

In the near future, scientists have figured out how to create eggs and sperm from any bodily cell. Now there’s an illegal market devoted to stealing celebrities’ DNA so fans can have their babies.

This imaginative premise piqued my interest, and a series of well-paced plot developments kept me turning pages. The perspective shifts smoothly among three protagonists, allowing readers to explore this intriguing scenario from multiple perspectives. The science and technology advancements seem scarily plausible, and the story sizzles with twists and turns I never saw coming. The ending is one of the most satisfying I’ve ever read, a real humdinger.
