Book cover of Nexus

Carol Moreira ❤️ loved this book because...

Yuval Harari's work is always compelling, thought-provoking and deeply human. As a historian, he is skilled at linking humanity's present times and crises with similar events in our past to suggest and warn how future events might play out. In Nexus, he examines the history of human information networks from the Stone Age to our current troubles with social media etc. He is particularly compelling on the subject of artificial intelligence, showing how, unless we are very careful, we will find ourselves controlled by AI. Human civilizations and indeed our very survival are at stake, he warns..

Book cover of Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon: Gripping Accounts of All Known Fatal Mishaps in the Most Famous of the World's Seven Natural Wonders

Carol Moreira 👍 liked this book because...

Early in 2024, I visited Grand Canyon with my husband. We were surprised when the tour guide suggested walking down inside the canyon even though the trail was covered in icy patches. We assumed we would be safe, and followed the guide down the trail, but conditions got worse and I headed back up with several others. Only my husband, the guide, and one other visitor carried on.
I was scared, going back up the trail, and imagined myself sliding off the sides of the canyon and into the abyss. It was an anxious wait until my husband returned. Later, I saw this book in the bookstore and picked it up.
Reading it, I learned there are many accidents at the canyon with many and various causes -- all kinds of weather, lack of knowledge and planning, dehydration, overconfidence , selfies etc. The book is a really interesting demonstration of the complexities of human nature and of the natural world. If you go, be careful!

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of February

Carol Moreira ❤️ loved this book because...

As a writer myself, I sometimes re-read books that particularly impressed me. February by Lisa Moore deals with the aftermath of a real 1982 disaster -- the sinking of the oil rig Ocean Ranger off the coast of Newfoundland. In her novel, Moore depicts the grief of one widowed mother, and shows how she must move beyond her grief in order to help her son. Beautifully written. A deeply human tale.
