My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Cat Lady

Lisa Darcy Why did I love this book?

I absolutely adored this novel. Mia is a married step mum with a fabulous house and career, and a beautiful 16-year-old cat called Pigeon, whom Mia loves with all her heart. As her marriage and life begin to unravel, Mia clings to her sanity by attending weekly pet bereavement classes, even though Pigeon is alive.

This was very much a novel I needed to read. My 17-year-old cat had just passed away, and I needed to grieve. I didn’t realise that this was the novel that would help me do that until I read this fabulous novel.

Grief doesn’t discriminate, nor does love or joy. I laughed. I cried and I cried some more. I loved this novel.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of I'll Leave You With This

Lisa Darcy Why did I love this book?

This novel is every bit as heartening, joyous, and thought-provoking as I’d hoped it would be. This story about the four O’Shea sisters navigating very different lives after their brother, Daniel’s death, becomes especially poignant when, on the third anniversary of his passing, one sister proposes that they trace the many recipients saved by his donated organs.

Complicated sibling relationships, raw emotions and heartache, I was immediately drawn into the sisters’ imperfect lives and inner turmoils and gripped from the first page of this thoroughly satisfying and believable yarn.

I didn’t want the story to finish because I didn't want to say goodbye to the characters who felt so real to me.

Why should I read it?

What is this book about?

A totally heartbreaking but uplifting story about family, loss and second chances.

Three years after Daniel was killed by a senseless act of violence, all his sisters have left of him are their memories - and responsibility for Daniel's mischievous dachshund John Thomas. Daniel donated his organs, his death facilitating life-saving miracles for other families, while his own loved ones struggle to come to terms with their devastating loss, each at a crossroads of her own.

It's been twelve years since film director Bridie had a hit, and while she's still invited to glitzy media events, nowadays it is as…

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of A Pocketful of Happiness: A Memoir

Lisa Darcy Why did I love this book?

Richard E. Grant’s memoir is heartfelt, sincere, and memorable. When his beloved wife Joan Washington died of cancer in 2021 after almost forty years together, she set Richard a challenge: to find a pocketful of happiness in every day. The result is this book.

Set between the present day and flashbacks, this is an immensely personal and profound memoir that celebrates and cherishes life’s unexpected joys. (Okay, the endless name-dropping, whilst entertaining, was a bit jarring.)

Hilarious, tragic and profoundly sad. This one will stay with me. I’m taking Joan’s advice to find a pocketful of happiness every day. A beautiful tribute to a loving partner.

The Pact

By Lisa Darcy,

Book cover of The Pact

What is my book about?

The Pact is about sisters, Samantha and Annie, doubles tennis champions and Olympic gold medallists. Tennis is the vehicle used to amplify the usual sibling issues and also explore the sisters’ professional partnership and personal relationship – similarities, differences, motivation, competition, abandonment, and grief.

How do the siblings respond to the stress of constantly being under the media spotlight? What happens when, at the pinnacle of fame, their relationship falls apart? With dreams shattered and egos destroyed, how do they cope?

I had a lot of fun writing this story and hope it resonates with readers, even if they don’t play tennis or know much about the game!
