My favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Business or Pleasure

Cassandra Diviak Why did I love this book?

A total page-turner, I adored Business or Pleasure for its hilarious premise and modern approach to sexuality.

In the contemporary romance genre, too many stories shy away from women taking an assertive role in the bedroom, but Solomon’s lead in Chandler inspired me to re-examine what spicy scenes should look like in my books and others.

The chemistry between the leads and the organic progression of their feelings is a masterclass in how to develop a romance worth binging. The trope of “bedroom lessons” has never been as good as the execution in this book, wholly focused on pleasure and the natural integration of safe sex discussions without feeling unrealistic.

This is a 10/10, fun read that’ll have readers gasping, laughing, and engaging with the source material.

My 2nd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of The Dead Romantics

Cassandra Diviak Why did I love this book?

Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics balanced the comedy of its premise (a woman who can see the dead and helps them) with emotional storylines revolving around guilt, loss, and the remembrance of things past.

The main character, Florence, takes the reader on a journey of rediscovering her passion for life and her power, which correlated closely with the journey I wrote for January in my book. As a central theme in the book, the power of grief to control and paralyze us is a truth the book tackles with such grace and heart.

I found myself break out into tears while reading and highly recommend for people interested in my books or a fantastic book generally.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023…

Book cover of Better Than the Movies

Cassandra Diviak Why did I love this book?

I read Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter during one of the hardest times of my life.

It was in a single sitting while I had been holed up in the ER, and I hadn’t cried/laughed as hard as I had while reading in months.

BTTM, is an enemies-to-lovers story that sees our female protagonist burdened with the grief of losing her mother and how the loss continued to impact her.

The mannerisms of the leads of BTTM (Liz and Wes) remind me of younger versions of the characters I wrote.

Their love story progressed much like a feel-good romcom, chockful of pining and the stary-eyed realization that The One was there all along.

What is this book about?

Perfect for fans of Kasie West and Jenn Bennett, this "sweet and funny" (Kerry Winfrey, author of Waiting for Tom Hanks) teen rom-com follows a hopelessly romantic teen girl and her cute yet obnoxious neighbor as they scheme to get her noticed by her untouchable crush.

Perpetual daydreamer Liz Buxbaum gave her heart to Michael a long time ago. But her cool, aloof forever crush never really saw her before he moved away. Now that he's back in town, Liz will do whatever it takes to get on his radar-and maybe snag him as a prom date-even befriend Wes Bennet.…
