The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy
Book description
"A uniquely charming mixture of whimsy and the macabre that completely won me over. If you ever wished for an adult romance that felt like Howl's Moving Castle, THIS IS THAT BOOK." —Helen Hoang, author of The Kiss Quotient

Why read it?
6 authors picked The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?
I haven't stopped talking about this book since I read it (and I've already read book 2). A unique world, memorable characters, and a swift-moving plot that never takes over. The romance is absolutely *heart eyes* - I cried, I laughed out loud, and then I recommended it to every person I know. One of the best romances I've ever read.
When you read a lot of paranormal romance, it’s often challenging to find something that feels new and fresh.
The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy took a seemingly familiar romantic trope – an anonymous love letter and found a way to make it unique. From its world building to the character interaction, it felt familiar and yet scrumptiously new. You wanted to learn more about the world and see the sparks fly between the two romantic leads.
If you like exploring new worlds and adore a love/hate romance, then this book is for you.
The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy was unlike anything I've ever read. It was a fantasy mixed with a romance, doused in comedy but with a good helping of "feels."
Seriously… I'm not sure there was an emotion this book didn't hit me with. I listened to the audiobook, and the narration was fantastic, but I loved it so much I'm going to grab myself a physical copy as well.
Hart is a demigod who hunts reanimated bodies. Since his business is death, he sees a lot of Mercy, who runs her father's undertaking business, whether he wants to or…
Absolutely delightful fantasy that reads like The Shop Around the Corner…with occasional zombies.
An epistolary love story
with a gruff marshal and a hardworking undertaker, this is a sweet and quirky
tale of two lonely souls who long for companionship but can only open their
hearts in letters to their unknown penpals. Sexy, fun, poignant, I enjoyed it
immensely.
From the first page to the end, this story hooked me with its enemies-to-lovers romance. It has a cast of great characters, all of them well-developed, and a huge dollop of conflict (Mercy saving the family undertaking business, Hart fighting zombie-like monsters) without constant stress. The romance progresses at the perfect pace.
I especially loved the world: it’s so calm and, at times, funny, even with the zombies. I loved that the gods and religion in the world feel tangible as if the gods have only recently departed; the religion is peaceful and brings people comfort. I was nervous to…
From Jane's list on romance set in a lighthearted, cozy fantasy world.
