Book cover of Murder at Mallowan Hall

Sybil Johnson ❤️ loved this book because...

If anyone mentions Agatha Christie, my ears perk up. I've loved her books since I first encountered them in junior high.

When I discovered there was a mystery series featuring Christie's fictional housekeeper, Phyllida Bright, I couldn't wait to read it. "Murder at Mallowan Hall" did not disappoint.

Phyllida's background is a bit mysterious, but whatever she did in her past, it prompts Christie to ask her to investigate when murder comes to her home. I could visualize Christie getting inspiration for a novel from the body found in her own library.

Whether you're an Agatha Christie fan or not, it's an engaging book. The plot was interesting and the interplay of the characters "below-stairs" was fun.

Tucked away among Devon’s rolling green hills, Mallowan Hall combines the best of English tradition with the modern conveniences of 1930. Book cover of The Thursday Murder Club

Sybil Johnson ❤️ loved this book because...

I'd heard so much about this book that I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I'm now firmly on the Richard Osman bandwagon.

The four friends who comprise the club are used to working on cold cases. When a "live" case happens in their retirement community, they pool their unique skills and experiences to solve the case.

They each have distinctive voices and different ways of viewing the world. Retirement is definitely not dull in this community.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The General's Gold

Sybil Johnson ❤️ loved this book because...

Sometimes I want to experience an adventure without having to leave my comfy chair. I'm particularly attracted to ones that involve underwater searches for shipwrecks and treasure.

"The General's Gold" fits the bill nicely. A real page-turner, it kept me reading late into the night.

The two main characters, a tech billionaire and a deep-sea diver who's a social media sensation, are an interesting pairing. I look forward to more Turner and Mosley adventures.
