'John Cook is the Jack Reacher of 1940's Britain' - Damien Lewis
*****
May 1940.
With Nazi forces sweeping across France, invasion seems imminent. The English Channel has never felt so narrow.
In rural Sussex, war veteran John Cook has been tasked with preparing the resistance effort, should the worst happen.
But even as the foreign threat looms, it's rumours of a missing child that are troubling Cook. A twelve-year-old girl was evacuated from London and never seen again, and she's just the tip of the iceberg - countless evacuees haven't made it to their host families.
An intriguing, convoluted storyline that kept me interested throughout. The back and forth between past and present was easy and satisfying to follow. I throughly reccomend.
1943 Twenty-four year old Bernhardt Lang is swept along by the currents of war, until an unexpected ally helps him live a life of his own making, in a place he could never have imagined himself existing.
1965 Twelve year old Joseph Holliman is drowning in a life no one should have to endure. When he crosses paths with Frank Gardner, everything he thinks he knows about the meaning of family is changed.
Between the Clouds and the River is a journey from the burning sands of war-torn North Africa to the mountains of Montana and British Columbia, an emotional…
Tennessee soldier Maurice ‘Mouse’ Forsyth has been watching over Brookwood Cemetery ever since his untimely death in 1917. For over a hundred lonely years, he has become the caretaker of lost souls, welcoming the good as well as the evil, the damaged, the mad and the bad.
But now something strange is happening. For the first time, Mouse seems to be able to communicate with the living. The head gardener’s teenage son, Luke, has seen him. Overwhelmed, Mouse tries to find a way to communicate with him. But before he can, Luke’s friend Matilda – a sad girl who has often been seen alone in the graveyard – goes missing. Mouse wants to help Luke, but he has never interfered with the world of the living before.
Leaning on the other spirits in the military cemetery, whose sad past lives are gradually revealed, Mouse is determined to find Matilda. But the outcome may not be what he was hoping for…
Will Mouse find a way to speak to Luke? Can he help discover what happened to Matilda? And will the Brookwood ghosts finally find peace?
