My favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Holy City

Eric Beetner ❤️ loved this book because...

I read primarily crime novels and to come across ones that delve deeper into real human actions and reactions is always gratifying. Holy City was a great thriller, but the characters kept it grounded and kept me interested.

By Henry Wise,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Holy City as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

“Holy City is an amazing piece of work. A Southern novel that examines the pathos and ethos of small-town life and the weight of both grief and hatred. Love it.”—S.A. Cosby

No one innocent. No one free. Nothing sacred.

Holy City is the captivating debut from Henry Wise about a deputy sheriff who must work alongside an unpredictable private detective after he finds himself on the outs from his sheriff's department over his unwillingness to look the other way when an innocent man is arrested for murder.

After a decade of exile precipitated by the tragic death of his mother,…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Hired Guns

Eric Beetner ❤️ loved this book because...

Hockensmith has written Western/mystery hybrids before, which I loved, but this is straight Western and it's fantastic. It doesn't lose any of his signature humor (something sadly lacking in too many novels these days) and the action never lets up. First in a series and I look forward to more!

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Double Barrel Bluff

Eric Beetner ❤️ loved this book because...

The third Shake Bouchon book from Berney, but it's been many years between books. I didn't realize how much I'd missed Shake. Berney is always a fantastic writer, but these books showcase his sense of humor and his wild plot turns.

What is this book about?

Multi-award winning and USA Today bestselling crime writer Lou Berney returns to his critically acclaimed thriller series starring former mob wheelman Shake Bouchon, who finds himself dragged into a high-stakes hostage rescue, among the mighty temples and shadowy underground of Cambodia.

During his years as a wheelman for the Armenian mob in Los Angeles, Shake Bouchon didn't think of himself as the settling-down type. But now he's happily married to Gina, the love of his life-and former adversary-in Indiana, of all places.

The great thing about Bloomington, for two people with checkered pasts, is that everyone is nice and no…
