My favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Spare

Andrew Crofts Why did I love this book?

The book is beautifully written by J.R. Moehringer and touched me for a number of reasons.

Harry was a sensitive child, born into a situation that showed his sensitivities no mercy. The depictions of his schooldays and the loss of his mother are entirely convincing, as are the insights into family life in the royal family. He comes across as a decent man, trying his best to find a useful path in life, and the story of how he fell in love with Meghan and how she helped him to break free is utterly heartfelt.

The hate-filled newspaper headlines drawn from the book completely misrepresented the actual text and most of the reviews online say that reading it changed the reviewers’ views of the prince entirely, which I am guessing is exactly what Mr Moehringer was hoping to achieve.

What is this book about?

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow-and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness-and,…

Book cover of Politics On the Edge

Andrew Crofts Why did I love this book?

Rory Stewart was a British politician with a wide experience of the world, who worked in a variety of Ministerial jobs and ran for the leadership against Boris Johnson.

His honesty about his own failings and the failings of the political system that we currently have, make him an endearing guide to life at the top of the political tree. He is a brilliant writer and a decent man, which makes him a rarity in today’s political landscape.

The reality of ministerial life and the helplessness of conviction politicians which he reveals is truly shocking.

My 3rd favorite read in 2023

Book cover of Yellowface

Andrew Crofts Why did I love this book?

This is part thriller, part comedy, exposing the workings of the publishing world.

It is deadly accurate about how it feels to be a struggling writer, and how it feels to be a feted author of bestsellers. It touches on all the difficulties surrounding plagiarism and appropriation, and the questions about who has the right to write about what, in this age of sensitivity and social media witch-hunts. Very well written indeed.
