Book cover of The Shetland Way

Gareth Dale ❤️ loved this book because...

Shetland is a place bound tightly in "community." But when a huge windfarm is greenlit to export energy to mainland Scotland, it creates rifts between neighbours, friends and even families. One side supports the benefit to a planet spiralling into climate disaster; the other challenges the impact on an environment with its already struggling wildlife populations. As an environmental journalist, the author is drawn to investigate this story of sustainable energy that is bound up with her own grieving over her deceased father (who comes from Shetland). She then finds herself on a transformative journey into the heart of a debate that mirrors global concerns about how we save the planet. As George McGavin says, this is "A remarkable and complex book about what makes us human."

What is this book about?

'Remarkable and complex' GEORGE MCGAVIN

A memoir and investigation exploring loss, community and the climate crisis in the Shetland Islands by environmental journalist Marianne Brown.

An extraordinary look at the global climate emergency through the microcosm of Shetland's historic and present day role in energy production.

How do we balance our needs with the needs of the natural world around us?

How can we have nuanced conversations and debate in a time of extreme activism or extreme denial?

How can we begin to understand the complexities of a subject as enormous as climate change?

And how can we change the…

Book cover of Intervals

Gareth Dale ❤️ loved this book because...

Intervals is a very moving and generous telling of what it means to give and receive care; it's a reflection on the author's mother's planned death. Stunning in its intimacy and urgent in its political purpose, the author is inviting us to think about the relationship between giving care and honouring life. This is a beautiful book.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Marianne Brooker,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Intervals as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

What makes a good death? A good daughter? In 2009, with her forties and a harsh wave of austerity on the horizon, Marianne Brooker's mother was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis. She made a workshop of herself and her surroundings, combining creativity and activism in inventive ways. But over time, her ability to work, to move and to live without pain diminished drastically. Determined to die in her own home, on her own terms, she stopped eating and drinking in 2019. In Intervals, Brooker reckons with heartbreak, weaving her first and final memories with a study of doulas, living…

A brilliant and brilliantly written exploration of the oil industry, and how it has taken over the world - and now intends to destroy it.

    🐇 I couldn't put it down

By Adam Hanieh,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Crude Capitalism as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

This expansive history traces the hidden connections between oil and capitalism from the late 1800s to the current climate crisis. Beyond simplistic narratives that frame oil as 'prize' or 'curse', Crude Capitalism uncovers the surprising ways that oil is woven into the fabric of our modern world: the rise of an American-centered global order; the breakdown of Empire and anti-colonial rebellion; contemporary finance and US dollar hegemony; debt and militarism; and the emergence of new forms of synthetic consumption. Much more than an energy source or transport fuel, oil has a foundational place in all aspects of contemporary life -…

Revolutionary Rehearsals in the Neoliberal Age

By Gareth Dale (editor), Colin Barker (editor), Neil Davidson (editor)

Book cover of Revolutionary Rehearsals in the Neoliberal Age

What is my book about?

“What remains of revolution after decades of neoliberalism? The question is both perplexing and urgent. With realism and radical intransigence, Revolutionary Rehearsals in the Neoliberal Age tackles it head on. Acknowledging the inadequacy of longstanding left-wing models to our era, the authors gathered here also refuse to counsel despair. Instead, they trace emancipatory impulses and upheavals across the scorched landscape of neoliberalism. The result is a provocative, stimulating, and deeply radical set of reflections on the meaning of revolution today. This is a book for everyone who wants to change the world.” —David McNally, author of Blood and Money and Monsters of the Market
