What is this book about?

It’s 1994, and Jesse Greer’s troubled older sister, Crys, has run away from home. Shy, socially awkward Jesse assumes that she has returned to her old haunts in the big city — until he discovers Crys’ remains in the woods behind his family’s house. Traumatised, Jesse runs to his parents for help, only to find that Crys has returned home, alive.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Teeth & Crumpets

Clarissa Pattern ❤️ loved this book because...

This is an absolute gem of an anthology. It's quirky and surprising, with humourous narrative voices wrapped around some genuinely dark shocks.
The stories are linked by a theme of teeth being mentioned in each tale, from the prettiness of a smile being the basis of a truly toxic relationship, to food being stuck between teeth forming the key part of a first date.
As a writer it was inspiring and joyous to see Joel Shoemaker having such fun with his theme and creating original story after original story.

What is this book about?

"...brimming with punchlines..." - Kirkus Reviews

Florilegium: "a collection of literary extracts; an anthology."

There are twenty-eight teeth in the adult human mouth, absent wisdom teeth.

In this collection, there are twenty-eight stories. Similarly, absent any wisdom.
All, at least vaguely, toothy.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Lanark: A Life in Four Books

Clarissa Pattern ❤️ loved this book because...

A stupendous intelligent novel that is about the stupidity of humans...and a zillion other things.
It is absolutely impossible to summarise it, it simply has to be experienced.

By Alasdair Gray,

Why should I read it?

4 authors picked Lanark as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

'Probably the greatest novel of the century' Observer
'Remarkable' William Boyd

Lanark, a modern vision of hell, is set in the disintegrating cities of Unthank and Glasgow, and tells the interwoven stories of Lanark and Duncan Thaw. A work of extraordinary imagination and wide range, its playful narrative techniques convey a profound message, both personal and political, about humankind's inability to love, and yet our compulsion to go on trying.

First published in 1981, Lanark immediately established Gray as one of Britain's leading writers.

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Airy Nothing

By Clarissa Pattern,

Book cover of Airy Nothing

What is my book about?

John is a character befitting so many of Shakespeare’s creations. He is Puck, Ariel, Juliet, and Viola all rolled into one… Airy Nothing is a rare book, indeed. Magical and airy, delightful and intriguing, a tribute work to Shakespeare and an exceptional work of art by this talented author.
