My favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of Angels & Man

Syd Neben I ❤️ loved this book because...

Angels & Man is the sequel to Angels Before Man. I adored the first book, so I knew Angels & Man would be an instant favorite.

Whereas Angels Before Man was a queer retelling of the fall of Lucifer, Angels & Man is a queer retelling of the watcher's flood. The book follows two angels, Azazel and Samyaza.

Samyaza is desperate to return heaven to its former glory, where Azazel has only known rejection since the war. Samyaza leads a group of angels down to Earth with the plan of turning humanity back towards God. But not everything goes according to plan when some of the angels start to feel more at home, and more loved, on Earth with the humans. Of course, Lucifer and his band of fallen angels roam the Earth, content to further dissuade the other angels.

The writing in this book is just as good as the first, possibly even better. I couldn't put this book down once I got it, and it left me in tears more than once. There were so many quotes I couldn't stop thinking about, but one that still stands out all these months later is, "God will never love you enough to stop hurting you."

This book was a masterpiece and I cannot wait for the third installment.

What is this book about?

A Queer Retelling of the Watcher's Flood

The angel Azazel is miserable in Heaven. In the aftermath of Satan's fall, the angels live in the reconstructed ruins of an old utopia, oppressive and paranoid of any new rebellion.

The angel Samyaza is content in Heaven, but he longs for the eternal city's former glory. Watching the feeble humans below, wallowing in sin for centuries after Adam and Eve, he sees opportunity to earn back the Lord’s favor.

On Earth, the Watcher angels arrive to lecture on God's love, but the love of a human soon begins to seem much warmer.

My 2nd favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of The Sunshine Court

Syd Neben I ❤️ loved this book because...

The Sunshine Court acts as a companion novel to the All For the Game Trilogy. This book follows Jean Moreau, who is more of a side character in the main series. But many fans of the main series, myself included, fell in love with this strangely unique and deeply scarred character.

Sakavic herself said in draft after draft, she killed Jean off. But there was something about him that she couldn't quite let go. So she forced him to live, to push past everything he endured while playing Exy at Evermore.

This book picks up when Jean first wakes up after the brutal beating he received from Riko, the supposed "King" of Exy. In order to keep himself alive, he signs with the USC Trojans, a team that is completely opposite of the Ravens in every way.

I truly didn't think Sakavic was capable of writing a character with even fewer self preservation skills than Neil Josten, but she managed it. Jean Moreau is a character that will stick with me forever, his life has been nothing but tragedy after tragedy but he still loves. He overflows with it, so weary of putting his trust in people, but loving nonetheless. His friendships with the rest of the Trojans, with Jeremy, Cat and Laila specifically, mean so much to me.

This book left me feeling sick to my stomach, had me laughing out loud, and made me ache for Jean Moreau. I hope to see more of his story in the future.

My 3rd favorite read in 2024…

Book cover of Fallen Thorns

Syd Neben I ❤️ loved this book because...

Fallen Thorns is a debut novel for Baxter, and an extremely strong one at that. Fallen Thorns isn't just a simple vampire story. So much unfolds in this book it left my head spinning.

We follow Arlo, a sweet, innocent and shy young man. He set out to attend university, thinking he already had his entire life mapped out. Until he dies. Everything Arlo ever thought he knew about the world is turned completely upside down. He is taken in by a group of people who say they will teach him what he is and how to survive in the world with his newfound immortality. But there's something darker lurking in the shadows, something Arlo might not be able to outrun.

The last few chapters of this book left me completely bewildered, I had to put the book down more than once just to contemplate what I had just read. I am excited for the second book in this series, but also extremely nervous for what might happen to a group of characters I've grown to love.

Don‘t forget about my book 😀

Antique Roman

By Syd Neben,

Book cover of Antique Roman

What is my book about?

In the tale of Hamlet, Horatio is recorded as a loyal friend, but what if he were more? What if he filled Hamlet’s heart and dreams? And Hamlet filled his? This modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, told through Horatio’s eyes is much more than a tragedy. Antique Roman is also a love story about how the handsome and dashing Prince of Denmark finds himself drawn to the quiet, introverted Horatio while at university in Wittenberg. Slowly but surely, Hamlet helps the guarded Horatio see his own true value and shows him how love can bring light to life.

But all too soon for the lovers, Hamlet receives word that his father, the King, has died, and he is to return to Elsinore in Denmark to comfort the grieving Queen. Horatio soon follows to support Hamlet, but finds the royal court mired in intrigue. It appears the late King’s death may not have been of natural causes, the Queen has already remarried her late husband’s brother who has taken the throne, and there have been reports of sightings of the dead King’s ghost.

Told mostly in modern English, this novel also weaves in lines from Shakespeare’s original play, thus offering readers an easy-to-understand version of the Bard’s Hamlet that still captures its flavour and mastery. It also opens up intriguing possibilities about what was the real story behind the play.
