Book cover of Turning Problems Into Profits

Joylynn M. Jossel ❤️ loved this book because...

Prior to reading this book, whether it was personal or business related, a problem was a problem. And problems typically end up costing you money versus make money for you. But after reading this book, I learned that throwing money at problems isn't always nor the only solution, but that there is a way to actually turn that problem into money!

By the time you finish reading this book you'll be saying, "Yeah, I've got problems!"

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Tu Success!

Joylynn M. Jossel ❤️ loved this book because...

Although this book was a memoir, it read like fiction. I love a non-fiction book that makes me forget that I'm reading about someone's real life. The author wasn't afraid to use dialogue, description, and all five senses to pull me into her world.

I've read many stories in which the author shares their pain. I've been able to empathize. But I literally felt pain while reading some parts of this book, especially when the author shares her experience when forced into a ritual done on a young female's private body parts as part of her culture.

Author Mariatu Tu Browne shares a bold story of perseverance in ending the negative patterns in her life, and starting a new life and a new business! Although the book starts off sharing how the author had to resort to stripping when she left her country and came over to America, this is not your typical urban from stripper to boss lady. This is an intelligent read, spoken in the language of a true boss . . . because this author is the boss of her own enterprise.

Book cover of To Fudge or Not to Fudge

Joylynn M. Jossel ❤️ loved this book because...

I love a Hallmark movie in a book. And my absolutely favorite Hallmark movies are ones that deal with food and cooking. And as you can tell by the title of this book, food was one of the characters; fudge to be exact. Which explains why I chose the characters as the first thing I liked most about the book.

As a literary agent, I shopped a client's book that had a character similar to this book's main character. Not always likeable because they don't have the sappy sensitivity and empathy a lot of readers like in main characters. A couple of the rejection letters (she did end up getting an offer) said they loved the story but couldn't get past the character's attitude. And I like complicated characters like that. It can't always be about readers liking the character, but characters like the reader. This allows them to REALLY see themselves in the book, and sometimes folks just can't handle seeing who they truly are.

Regardless, the setting is the tourist destination of Mackinac Island. So, I felt like this book was a literary vacation for me. On top of this being a quirky romance, with food, on an island, there was a mystery to be solved . . . thanks to the Mal, the cute puppy of the main character, discovering those bones by the bush.
