Book cover of Olive, Mabel & Me

Colin Whittemore ❤️ loved this book because...

Andrew Cotter, a well known broadcaster and sports commentator, showed an another side. A personal, introspective Scotsman who loves his country and his dogs. Feelings shared by myself. Despite his 'day job', he is evidently a man of the hills, glens and wildernesses of the Highlands. His understanding of dogs comes through clear. As does his own character. The book is a joy to pick up and read, leaving you the better for it.

By Andrew Cotter,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Olive, Mabel & Me as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

When sporting events were put on hold in March 2020, commentator Andrew Cotter shifted to working from home. The one-on-one competitors? His two Labrador retrievers, Olive and Mabel. In the hilarious videos that ensued, the dogs engage in various contests, from bone-snatching and breakfast-eating to crushing it on the dog walk, while Cotter narrates to hilarious effect. The scene of Mabel, simply standing still in a fetid pond was one of the most popular. Why? Because this is how dogs live, and Cotter captured it with humor and joy. It's why the series has been viewed more than 50 million…

My 2nd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of Shepherd of Another Flock

Colin Whittemore ❤️ loved this book because...

Helmsley is a lovely small Yorkshire town nestling between the Yorkshire Dales and The Yorkshire Moors. The author is its vicar. He tells of the lives of the people who fall into his care as he goes about his pastoral calling. He evidences the old-fashioned approach to the job of a rural minister. A breath of fresh air, reminding us of what 'being called' is really all about. It was fun and serious, all at the same time, leaving one thinking ... .

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Shepherd of Another Flock as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

'Shh, new vicar might be listening . . .'

As the newly appointed Vicar of Helmsley, David was looking forward to working in this picturesque market town, set in the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. Admittedly the vicarage, which dated back to the twelfth century, was extremely cold and damp. And not all of his parishioners were impressed by his new-fangled ways. But with the help of the irrepressible Father Bert, a retired cleric and one-time Tail End Charlie, David set about winning over the townsfolk.

There was Lord Feversham, the local landowner who at times bore an unnerving resemblance to Henry…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of A History of France

Colin Whittemore ❤️ loved this book because...

I wanted to know about the story (history) of France, from early times through to my own era. John Julius Norwich told me in the most refreshing and readable of styles. This was his last book I think, so he just let himself be himself. The result is that you become fond of this wise old man telling you the stories you did not know you needed to know. His love of France comes through too, which I am sure will help readers in both France and England understand his style. Such a delight to be educated! And, as well as being well entertained I learned exactly what I originally looked for.

By John Julius Norwich,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked A History of France as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

John Julius Norwich―called a “true master of narrative history” by Simon Sebag Montefiore―returns with the book he has spent his distinguished career wanting to write, A History of France: a portrait of the past two centuries of the country he loves best.

Beginning with Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul in the first century BC, this study of French history comprises a cast of legendary characters―Charlemagne, Louis XIV, Napoleon, Joan of Arc and Marie Antionette, to name a few―as Norwich chronicles France’s often violent, always fascinating history. From the French Revolution―after which neither France, nor the world, would be the same…

Taught by Dogs

By Colin Whittemore,

Book cover of Taught by Dogs

What is my book about?

Everyone who loves dogs will identify with the book and be warmed by its sentiments. The sub title is 'working, farm & family'. The author spent his young life on a small family dairy farm where he lived with country dogs – sheepdogs, terriers, hounds. As his career developed he left the farm, exchanging working dogs for pet dogs. The style is light and engaging; often humorous, sometimes sad, but always entertaining. The reader is taken through a long life at the centre of which have been the dogs. First as workmates, then as friends, and latterly as companions.
