Book cover of Out of the Drowning Deep

Brandon Crilly ❤️ loved this book because...

An aged automaton, an angel looking for more and an investigator who feeds their worst memories to a *different* angel is an ensemble that's profoundly weird and deeply relatable, in a way that only A.C. Wise can pull off. Add a far future take on a world where gods are known, feared or tolerated and you have one of the most incredible stories I've read this year.

What is this book about?

In the distant future, when mortals mingle with the gods in deep space, an out-of-date automaton, a recovering addict, and an angel race to solve the Pope's murder in an abandoned corner of the galaxy.

Dreamy, beautifully written science-fantasy novella, for fans of Martha Wells and This is How You Lose the Time War.

Scribe IV is an obsolete automaton living on the Bastion, a secluded monastery in an abandoned corner of the galaxy. When the visiting Pope is found murdered, Scribe IV knows he has very little time before the terrifying Sisters of the Drowned Deep rise up to…

Book cover of Coyote Run

Brandon Crilly ❤️ loved this book because...

Sometimes you just need to follow a bugf**k runner on a rescue op into fascist territory and watch her crack a few skulls. Actually, who am I kidding? We need stories like Saintcrow's all the time. This is the first of hers I've read and it won't be the last.

By Lilith Saintcrow,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Coyote Run as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

In the first Amazing Tale of Antifascist Action, New York Times bestselling author Lilith Saintcrow serves up science fiction pulp in a North America fractured by drones, bioweapons, and ideology, giving us a heroine practically made out of violent resistance.

THE RUNNER

Just behind the front lines of a war they call 'civil', the shifter called Coyote is tough, fast, ugly-and known for taking jobs nobody else will.

THE JOB

Marge's sister is locked in a prison camp civilians shouldn't know about, deep in enemy territory. Rescuing her will take a plan made of weapons-grade insanity.

Book cover of Flooded Secrets

Brandon Crilly ❤️ loved this book because...

Second in the Chronicles of Nerezia series of novellas. Just when I thought the found family was complete, Arseneault introduces us to Keza, and the dynamic between this feline rogue and our existing heroes is amazing. Combined with more layers to Nerezian lore, the mystery surrounding Aliyah, Horace's quest to be useful and Rumi's protectiveness, Flooded Secrets continues what is proving to be a delightful and gripping journey of friendship and purpose.

By Claudie Arseneault,

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Flooded Secrets as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Fate and friendship brought Horace, Rumi, and Aliyah together in Rumi's Wandering Wagon of Wonderful Wares, a sentient self-propelling wagon. They seek the forest haunting Aliyah's dream, hoping for answers about their past and their unique abilities-but for that, they need to traverse a world haunted by Fragments, dangerous shards that can possess travellers.

With the Fragments in the wilderness, banditry was the last danger Horace had expected on the road-but not even that could stop Keza Nesmit. Swift and deadly with a staff, Keza drops on the Wagon crew, claiming most of their provisions before vanishing back into the…

Catalyst

By Brandon Crilly,

Book cover of Catalyst

What is my book about?

Street magician Mavrin Leed doesn’t believe in what he can’t see or prove. His performances are mere tricks; the only true magic in Aelda comes from the benevolent, god-like Aspects circling it. As long as They keep the Lifesphere intact, he stays out of Their way.

Labeled a heretic, Eyasu Temergon is convinced that Aelda’s true history was hidden, even from the Aspects. He scours forgotten shadows for proof of the Raw, creatures of energy tied to the fracturing of his world. When their sudden emergence leads to destruction and chaos, Eyasu puts aside his estrangement with his old friend, and hopes Mavrin can do the same.

Ex-soldier Deyeri Renn has a mystery of her own: why are her city’s leaders so interested in the Raw? She spent too long fighting in the Winds to let a myth harm her city, and too many years alone to accept the life-worn man who bumbles back into her home, with no right to ask for her help.

As Deyeri, Mavrin, and Eyasu unpack the secrets that once drove them apart, every seal in their relationship means one more crack that could unravel Aelda’s very existence.

Catalyst is the stunning debut by Ottawa author Brandon Crilly, a fantasy tale of magic, friendship, and holding a broken world together.
