When I was six, my father, a tall, bearded naval officer, read me Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” I thought it might be autobiography. Ever since, I've been fascinated by stories where fantasy and reality meet and blend. I studied English literature, taught Dead English Poets to undergraduates, became an editor/writer for hire. Along the way, I canoed, hiked the Rockies, and learned to sail a traditional Nova Scotian schooner. I have two sons, to whom I read stories night after night when they were much younger than they are now. Since retiring, I write fantasy adventure novels set aboard real sailing ships and stories about dragons who talk to exceptional people.
I have revisited Darkover Landfalloften, but it never loses its hold on my imagination. It’s the Darkover novels’ origin story, telling what happens when an interstellar colonizing starship goes off course and crash-lands on an uncharted planet. The title of this book, Philosophical Possibilities Beyond Death, only partly reveals its focus. Its deeper purpose is to be found in the subtitle: Exploring the Evidence from Psychical Research.
Though the author, Prof. Brooke Moore, provides an excellent summary of the Western philosophical debates for and against an afterlife, it’s merely to set the stage for the main event: an in-depth analysis of the philosophical implications of afterlife-related extraordinary phenomena.
Moore, who is co-author of the standard book on critical thinking (now in its 13th edition!), considers the evidence from mediumship, apparitions, near-death and out-of-body experiences, reincarnation, electronic voice phenomena, and xenoglossy (the spontaneous ability to speak in languages not previously known).
It’s quite a feat and the result is one of the best books on parapsychology and the afterlife – whether you agree with his conclusions or not.

I love books where the setting is just as big and alive as the characters. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s a familiar place or someplace new: if a vivid setting is a key element of the story, I’m in. I think it’s because I grew up in one of those small towns in the beautiful middle of nowhere where if someone asks where you’re from, it’s just easier to say someplace else. I wanted to see the world, and books let me do that. I also wanted validation in reading—and writing—about the small places I knew, and books let me do that, too.

Akira is a must-read manga masterpiece, a deep analysis of government corruption, political upheaval, criminality, and decay of society. I’ve been fascinated with ghost stories since I was a kindergartener hiding in the closet with a flashlight, swapping scares with my friends.
